COLLEGE BACKGROUND
Mercedes College is a Catholic school for girls in Years 7 to 12 owned by the Sisters of Mercy. Situated in the heart of the City of Perth and part of the City’s heritage precinct, the College was the first foundation of the Sisters of Mercy in Australia and is the oldest girls’ school in Australia on the original site of foundation.

Throughout its 178 years of Mercy education, the College has demonstrated a commitment to the highest quality educational experience for girls from a diversity of cultures and backgrounds. OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION
The Art Technician at Mercedes College plays a pivotal role in supporting the Arts department to ensure a dynamic and effective learning environment. This position involves the preparation and maintenance of art materials and equipment, providing technical assistance during classes, and contributing to the organisation and display of student artwork. They also provide administrative support and assist with preparations for the art exhibition.

The ideal candidate will possess strong organisational skills, flexibility, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for the arts, coupled with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.

This role is under the Teaching Aides and Teaching Assistants, Level and step progression will be based on years of experience. The FTE is calculated on 13 hours per week (2 days).

 

KEY DUTIES

Pastoral

  • Advocate and support the Mercy ethos, values and mission of the College
  • Promote and maintain Gospel values and the Catholic tradition among all sectors of the College, including students, staff and parents
  • Ensure all undertakings are student focused

Responsibilities

  • Obtain quotes and order consumable art supplies as directed – research products as directed
  • Unpack, check and store art supplies
  • Assist with the tidying of the studio spaces and storage facilities
  • Preparation of materials for classes as directed
  • Load fire and unload kiln as requested
  • Assistance to teachers in practical classes and on excursions
  • Wash aprons and towels regularly
  • Help prepare and hang art exhibitions
  • Liaise with OH&C regarding storage of chemicals
  • Keep records up to date for the MSDS’s
  • Take a shared responsibility to ensure ongoing support for a child-safe culture within the Catholic Education system

Other

  • Comply with the Mercy Education Limited Code of Conduct, management directives and approved policies and procedures
  • Engage in the co-curricular life of the College
  • Actively participate in the Work Health and Safety program at the College. This includes completing all Mercy Education Ltd modules within the time frame provided
  • Assist in the coordination of and actively participate in various school functions
  • Comply with the staff dress code at all times
  • Any other duties as directed by the Arts Co-ordinator or their delegate

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Knowledge of and a commitment to the ethos and mission of the College
  • Knowledge of art materials, processes and equipment
  • Practical problem-solving and multi-tasking skills
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Well-organised, accurate and creative
  • Competency in Microsoft Office programs and in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator desirable
  • Willingness to be flexible with work hours particularly during peak periods

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Mercy Education Limited is the Employer of all staff at Mercedes College and employment will be subject to the terms and conditions of The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Perth Non-Teaching Staff Enterprise Bargaining Agreement 2014 and the Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia Policy Statements and school based policy statements.

The successful candidate will also require:

  • A current Working with Children Check Card (WWC)
  • A National Police Clearance (no older than 90 days)
  • Accreditation to work in a Catholic School or preparedness to complete
  • Undergo Mandatory Reporting training
  • Undergo Staff Code of Conduct training
