Job Description - Data Scientist

Trans Mountain Corporation operates Canada’s only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. We deliver approximately 890,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through a dual pipeline system of more than 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta, British Columbia and Washington state.

Trans Mountain also operates a state-of-the-art loading facility, Westridge Marine Terminal, with three berths providing tidewater access to global markets.

As a federal Crown corporation, Trans Mountain continues to build on more than 70 years of experience delivering operational and safety excellence through our crude oil pipeline system.

With our expanded pipeline system now in place, Trans Mountain provides enhanced direct access for Canadian crude oil to world markets. The expansion realizes a world-class system for oil transport, developed to Canada’s high standards within one of the most stringent regulatory regimes in the world, creating long-term economic benefits, enhanced marine protection, enhanced safety and emergency management capabilities, and enhanced skilled-worker capacity building in communities and Indigenous groups.

As a Data Scientist with Trans Mountain, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a progressive and fast-paced group of Experts in the Information Systems & Technology department. The position is based in our Calgary Office and works a hybrid schedule.

The Data Scientist will partner with business and operational leaders to provide an impact by leveraging data and analytical tools, strategic thinking, and hypothesis-based analysis on machine learning (ML)-based projects. The Data Scientist is responsible for modelling complex business problems through statistical, algorithmic, mining, and visualization techniques. Further, they will support senior leadership by creating business insights, reports, and analyses to aid decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Assess and review existing analytic processes to identify best practices and opportunities for improvement (analysis may be applied to various areas of the business).
  2. Perform large-scale experimentation to identify hidden relationships between variables in datasets and build data-driven models to answer business questions.
  3. Translate business needs into analytics/reporting requirements (interactive dashboards, reports, and presentations) to effectively communicate complex analytical findings to stakeholders and support executive decisions and workflows with the required information.
  4. Design and conduct data analyses with the highest standard of rigor and scientific accuracy; this includes study design, methodology, algorithms, and statistical modelling.
  5. Develop predictive models to forecast future trends, behaviors, or outcomes based on current and historical data.
  6. Proactively mine data sources, such as databases, data lakes, and third-party datasets to identify trends and patterns and generate insights for business units and senior leadership.
  7. Perform in-depth statistical analysis using advanced statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms to support a wide variety of business initiatives such as customer segmentation or behavioral models.
  8. Research and implement cutting-edge techniques and tools using machine learning/deep learning/artificial intelligence and other enabling technologies to make data analysis more efficient.

Qualifications and Professional Experience

  1. 3 to 5 years of experience in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a Related Field.
  2. Experience in multiple programming languages and statistical analysis tools such as Python, C#, R, JS, MySQL and analytics in Excel, Power Query, Docker, Linux. Experience in React is an advantage.
  3. Knowledge of statistical and data mining techniques such as generalized linear model (GLM)/regression, random forest, hierarchical clustering, deep learning, convolutional neural network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN).
  4. Ability to use diverse visualization tools and software, preferably PowerBI.
  5. Understanding of cloud technology and services preferably Azure (AzureML Studio, Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Purview) and clearly understand concepts for basic infrastructure (such as RBAC, Pipelines, Networking and Firewall rules, etc.).
  6. Strong presentation skills, including storytelling and other techniques to guide and inspire.
  7. Understanding of Change Management concepts and its applications.
