Workplace Description:

Sussex and St. Stephen offer Level 5 designation trauma EDs within the community hospitals.

The Sussex Health Center has approximately 27 inpatient beds and several outpatient specialty clinics, dialysis, on-site lab, XR, and ultrasound Monday to Friday. It is approximately 45 minutes from the Saint John Regional Hospital, our tertiary referral center. Sussex is also the newest site to host incoming integrated Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine residents.

St. Stephen, the New Brunswick border town with Calais, Maine, USA, is home to Charlotte Country Hospital. With 45 inpatient beds, a Complex Care Unit adjacent to the ED, full time lab and Xray, Monday to Friday ultrasound, outpatient specialty clinics and soon to have a new CT scanner on-site (estimated June 2024), the CCH ED is about 75 minutes' drive from the Saint John Regional Hospital. The CCH ED sees both medical students and residents take shifts, and the robust SJREM simulation program hosts on-site sessions on a rotating basis.

Both the Sussex and CCH EDs see a large variety of patients and presentations, with excellent support for local admissions to Family/Hospitalist medicine and stat transfers to the referral center in Saint John for emergent consults/admissions as required. The EDs are well-equipped for comprehensive resuscitation and stabilization of critical presentations. The four sites operate like one big department!

The SJRH is our tertiary academic hospital and regional hub with approximately 400 acute care beds. Saint John is the home of Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick and Saint John boasts residencies in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and our unique Integrated FM-EM residency training program. The SJRH ED provides 24/7 emergency care and is the provincial cardiac center and a Level 1 Trauma center. Consultant colleagues include most specialties – but don’t be surprised if you get to know all of your colleagues on a first name basis!

Position Description:

The Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department is actively seeking a CCFP with EM certification OR experience to complement our group of enthusiastic physicians. Opportunities exist for full time ED or part time ED and free to pursue other work (Family practice, after hours clinics, locums, etc).

Clinical excellence, an interest in teaching the health care professions and a keen interest to work effectively on interdisciplinary teams involving all levels of health care providers are essential attributes in our growing, collegial environment.

Our community site departments offer primarily solo ED coverage, with Charlotte County having an 11-hour day and 13-hour night, and Sussex currently having two 9-hour shifts from 8 am to 11 pm with a three-hour overlap.

Options for work at St. Joseph’s Hospital is available for all department members. This is a smaller community hospital in downtown Saint John, serving the city center, including vulnerable populations. The Urgent Care Centre is open 8AM – 8PM and is staffed by Emergency Physicians, Family Physicians and Nurse Practitioners.

The SJRH ED offers 8-hour shifts with 19 hours of double or more coverage daily.

Willingness to travel to and from all area hospitals as required.

Remuneration:

Remuneration at CCH and SHC is based on a clinical rate of $225.86/hr with a small top-up for EM certification. UCC is paid at the sessional rate of $208.74 and with EM certification $217.48/hr. The SJR ED pays $256/hr and for overnights, $300/hr.

No shadow billing is required. Full-time physicians who take 6 weeks of leave typically gross $350,000+ per year.

Additional financial benefits offered by the Horizon Health Network, Government of New Brunswick or New Brunswick Medical Society include:

• A rural recruitment incentive of $100,000 for a 4-year return of service stipulating minimum of 60% of 1-FTE equivalent shifts at rural sites.


• Relocation expenses reimbursed up to $8,000


• CME reimbursements of $5293 per year for registration and travel costs for rural physicians


• Generous CMPA reimbursement (currently 100% of annual dues)


• Reimbursement for the EM Review CCFP(EM) Exam Prep Course ($3,000) for those who qualify for the NB Physician Bursary program. See EMReview.cafor details.

Qualifications:

• A medical degree is required.


• Certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada – Emergency Medicine, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Emergency Medicine; or ABEM, FRCEM, or equivalent OR


• Candidates with CCFP designation and emergency medicine experience but without certification are eligible for the rural positions in Sussex Health Center, Charlotte County Hospital and St. Joesph’s Urgent Care Center, but are not able to take shifts at the Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department at this time except if engaging in mentorship program to challenge CCFP CAC EM.


• Candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.


• Current certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Life Support (PALS) or Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS)


• Competency in Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) and Emergency Airway Management is required.


• Proficiency in English is required. Bilingual skills would be considered an asset.


• In accordance with immigration requirements, preference will be given to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada.


• Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.


• Good attendance and work record.


• Physically able to perform assigned duties.
