Summary:

Unipec Canada is seeking a Systems Administrator to join its Information Technology team in Calgary. Reporting to the IT Manager with a dotted-line to the local management team, this role is responsible for managing and maintaining the company's IT infrastructure, enterprise applications, and security posture. The ideal candidate brings 3–6 years of hands-on systems administration experience and a proactive mindset for security, automation, and continuous improvement. This position plays a key role in supporting day-to-day operations across Calgary, Houston, and Hong Kong.

Responsibilities:

Infrastructure & Operations

  • Manage and maintain Windows Server, Linux (Ubuntu/CentOS/RHEL), Active Directory, and virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Administer on-premise Exchange Server and Microsoft 365 (M365) environments, including mailboxes, policies, and services.
  • Manage and optimize network infrastructure, including switches, routers, Fortinet firewalls, and VPN solutions.
  • Maintain Azure cloud resources and support hybrid identity and infrastructure integrations.
  • Oversee endpoint management using JAMF, SCCM, or Intune; manage MDM solutions and corporate mobile device plans.
  • Assist in procurement, installation, and lifecycle management of hardware and software assets.

Security

  • Monitor and review applications, systems, and security logs; investigate and remediate anomalies.
  • Enforce security policies, access controls, and compliance with the company's security framework.
  • Administer and maintain Fortinet security solutions, including FortiGate firewall policies and VPN configurations.
  • Support vulnerability assessments, patch management, and endpoint security programs.
  • Contribute to security incident response planning and execution.
  • Maintain and enforce standardized data-entry and change-management practices across IT systems.

User Support & Service Management

  • Serve as an escalation point for help desk requests; provide technical support for hardware and software issues.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls in Active Directory and associated systems.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent, secure system operations.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with business stakeholders to support IT initiatives and projects.

Administration & Governance

  • Assist the IT Manager with IT policy development, procedure documentation, and governance activities.
  • Track and analyze IT-related expenses; prepare procurement requests and expense reports.
  • Manage telecom systems and cellular plans in accordance with company policies.
  • Apply ITIL practices for incidents, change, and problem management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field preferred.
  • Relevant IT certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+, Microsoft Certified, Fortinet NSE, AZ-900 or higher) preferred.

Experience

  • 3–6 years of progressive experience in systems administration or IT infrastructure roles.
  • Demonstrated experience with Windows Server, Linux (Ubuntu, CentOS, RHEL), and Active Directory administration.
  • Hands-on experience with Exchange On-Premise and Microsoft 365 administration.
  • Proven experience managing Fortinet security appliances (FortiGate firewall, VPN) — required.
  • Experience with Azure cloud services and hybrid infrastructure — required.
  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Experience with endpoint management solutions (JAMF, SCCM, Intune).
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash, or Python) is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with ticketing systems and ITIL-based incidents and change management processes.

Skills & Competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of networking concepts: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPNs, and firewalls.
  • Strong understanding of system vulnerabilities, security best practices, and endpoint protection.
