Position: Sessional Lecturer/Part-Time Lecturer in Built Environment

School/Department: Built Environment Section, University of Reading Malaysia

Reports to: Head of Built Environment Section – Malaysia

Employment Type : Teaching Intensive – Permanent

Responsible for: Students and Research Assistants (where applicable)



We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Sessional Lecturer/Part-Time Lecturer to enhance teaching and course leadership capability in the broad area of construction contract and statutory law. This is one of a series of planned appointments aimed at supporting and enhancing our undergraduate programme in quantity surveying offered within the Built Environment Section of University of Reading Malaysia. 


Teaching responsibilities will include core contributions to the BSc Quantity Surveying undergraduate programme, including the planning and execution of student projects. It is envisaged that the successful applicant will have a background in law (LLB or LLM), or Construction related fields with a specialist interest in Construction Law. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate scholarship in developing a publication record in their area of specialist expertise. Opportunities are also available for the successful candidate to engage in research.  There is potential for collaboration with other schools within the University, including the School of the Built Environment in the UK. 


Main duties and responsibilities

  • To introduce undergraduate quantity surveying students to the principles of statutory legal landscape with specific focus on the practice of construction. 
  • To distinguish the variety of contractual roles that are defined in contracts, statutes, and standards.
  • To appraise the impact of construction contract and statutory law on case studies of construction practice to create clear and supportable conclusions. 
  • To collaborate on the future development of teaching at all levels within the Section. 
  • To undertake a reasonable share of administrative/management duties within the Section.
  • To contribute to the enterprise and outreach activities of the Section.
  • To participate in the supervision of research students relating to the candidate’s area of expertise (full support and training will be provided).


Supervision received

Newly appointed staff will receive general guidance from the Head of Section and other experienced staff in Malaysia and from academic colleagues within the School of the Built Environment in the UK.


Supervision given

Undergraduate research dissertation students and research assistants (where applicable).



There will be frequent contact and liaison with other Departments/Schools/Sections involved with teaching and programme development; the work involves engagement with the surveying profession nationally and internationally, as well as industrial liaison and contact with the general public in regard to research and development in the Section.


Terms and conditions

The post is a sessional/part-time role based in Malaysia. A sessional contract is a variation of a part-time contract where an employee is taken on to deliver teaching on a term- or semester-only basis.

Qualifications and Experience



Skills Required


  •  Subject Matter Expertise: Profound knowledge and expertise in construction law, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of legal principles, regulations, and industry practices. 
  • Effective Communication:Strong oral and written communication skills to convey complex legal concepts in a clear and understandable manner to students.
  • Teaching Proficiency: Ability to design and deliver effective lectures, seminars, and workshops that engage students and facilitate learning.



  • Research Abilities: Strong research skills to stay updated on evolving legal precedents, industry trends, and relevant case law.
  • Student Support: Commitment to providing guidance and support to students, fostering a positive learning environment.




  • Bachelor of Laws (LL. B)
  • BSc in Construction Programme (E.g. Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Building Surveying, or related programmes).
  • Postgraduate degree in Law (LL. M), Construction Law or relevant subject area (equivalent qualifications and/or experience would be considered).



  • Membership of relevant professional institution(s).
  • Evidence of publication record.




  • Broad-based knowledge of Law and Construction with a specialist in one of the following:
  • Construction Contract Law
  • Construction Statutory Law

Relevant Experience


  • Professional experience in Law or Construction related area in the Malaysian and/or international context.
  • Previous experience in an academicand/or professional practice environment sufficient to indicate the potential to develop a successful career in construction education



  • Experience in the management of student-centred project work.
  • Development of taught coursesor modules especially dealing with Malaysian accreditation bodies.
  • Experience of externally funded research projects at national or international level.




  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to scholarship and the development of a research and publication profile.
  • Generally good personal interaction skills.



  • Orientation towards innovative teaching methods.
  • A good sense of humour.
