Job Description - HR Advisor / HR Generalist (Part time)

Join our team during this important period of change. On 1 July 2024, we’re establishing a new commission focused on integrity in sport and recreation across Aotearoa New Zealand. 

Our new commission is here to ensure sport and recreation in Aotearoa New Zealand is safe and fair at all levels.  

Our responsibilities include:

  • Establishing integrity standards through an Integrity Code and supporting sport and recreation organisations in adopting and implementing these standards.  
  • Supporting these organisations to create respectful and inclusive environments where people —including our tamariki and vulnerable people — are safe from harmful or unethical behaviour, such as bullying or racism.
  • Assuming the anti-doping responsibilities that have historically been delivered by Drug Free Sport New Zealand.  
  • Preventing competition manipulation, such as match-fixing.  
  • In addition, as an independent organisation, offering free dispute resolution services, including culturally responsive resolution options, accessible to the sports and recreation sector.

The Why?:

Reporting to the General Manager, Specialist Services, the purpose of this role is to provide HR/people focused guidance and support across all HR functions in this establishment phase of our new commission.  This is a priority role for us!

This role supports the GM Specialist Services and people leaders, by working closely with our people (existing and new) and through initiatives to create a positive, productive and safe place to work.

What you'll be doing:

This is a true ‘one stop’ HR generalist position, and will include the following:

  • HR Administration: providing HR administration and coordination support across all stages of the Employment Lifecycle. 
  • HR Advisory: building relationships and credibility with the team, people managers, and senior leaders through the development of implementation of people-related policies, practices and fostering an inclusive workplace culture.
  • Recruitment and Selection: overseeing end-to-end recruitment and selection process and working closely with the hiring manager/s/
  • Induction and Onboarding: encouraging and assisting managers in developing comprehensive workplace induction plans, providing necessary information and support as needed. 
  • Employment Relations: administering all HR and personal information from IEA creation to personal files, conducting investigations and disciplinary procedures with relevant people managers, and collaborating with General Counsel or GM Specialist Services when necessary. 
  • Learning & Development: upskilling people managers in areas such as performance management, disciplinary procedures, and other employee relations matters to enhance their capabilities.
  • Metrics and Reporting: providing reports on HR metrics and trends, including recruitment KPIs, staff turnover, and disciplinary actions, to offer meaningful insights and commentary for reporting as required.
  • Projects: being involved in or leading other projects, as and when needed.


What you'll bring:

Experience & Attributes: 

  • Solid experience in an HR Advisor or similar HR Generalist role with strong knowledge of NZ employment law and experience applying it to policy, advice, recruitment, and performance management.
  • Experience in supporting organisational change initiatives, including communication, training, and stakeholder engagement (preferred).
  • Strong Microsoft Office suite knowledge and reasonably tech savvy.
  • Experience working within or an interest in working within a crown entity or the public service (advantageous).
  • Self motivated and able to work productively during periods of ambiguity or change.
  • Strong personal commitment to integrity in what and how we engage in sport and recreation.


  • Tertiary qualification in Human Resources or related field (preferred).

This role is a permanent part-time position (0.60 FTE + salary is paid pro-rata), ideally worked across a minimum of 4 days per week.
