Job Description - Senior Journalist, BBC News (Weekends - Digital News and Live)

Job Introduction

  • The BBC News website is one of the world’s largest and most popular news sites, with mobile and desktop editions for the UK and International audiences, as well as US and Asia editions, plus UK-facing and International-facing apps.
  • We are expanding our digital news operation, recruiting digital journalists to cover international and UK news in text and video. This operation will perform a crucial role in building the global audiences coming to the BBC as well as setting up our digital coverage to best serve and help grow the early morning UK audience coming to the site.
  • The new team, led from Sydney but also based across Singapore and London, will take over coverage from digital output teams in the UK and US - to drive the biggest global stories as they happen and set up our UK morning offer seven days a week. It will work closely with teams working in London and Washington.
  • The team will be expected to run live pages on the biggest moving stories, produce news stories and sharp angles in text and video, curate different editions of the website and the BBC News app and work with BBC correspondents and reporters around the world to bring our reporting to millions of people.

Main Responsibilities

  • The Senior Journalist (weekends) for the BBC’s Digital Output team will play a key role providing coverage of UK and international stories, picking up coverage from London and the US and handing back to early morning editors based in the UK. It will especially oversee weekend output, covering the desk on Saturdays and Sundays as well as some shifts on weekdays. This role will take primary responsibility for live pages and live coverage.
  • You will be expected to assess the most important stories of the day to cover, write and edit accurate, pithy news stories and commission or even produce timely digital video - with flair and context. You will have a love of news, sharp reporting skills and a thoughtful approach to how we tell a story.
  • The work this team does faces global and UK audiences. The team will cover the biggest breaking global stories and also ensure UK audiences wake up to the strongest offer on our digital platforms.
  • Tasks will range from jumping on breaking news for a live page, writing or editing the definitive news lead, chasing and developing story angles and producing or commissioning video clips that set the news in context. We want journalists to be able to monitor social media, search trends and audience data and use that to help us build new audiences. You will also be expected to curate the front pages of the various editions of the website and the apps.
  • You will be expected to take charge of live, on-the-day coverage of major news stories and planned events in text and video, ensuring the content is rich, accessible and up to the minute.
  • The team needs people who are enthusiastic about breaking news, well versed with the UK and global news agenda, and who have a good understanding of the best way to tell stories for digital audiences.
  • You’ll be based in our Singapore bureau, which also gathers news content and runs live television output - so you may be called upon to support those teams as part of your work.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Experience of writing and editing fast-paced, live and breaking news coverage in text for digital platforms with attention to accuracy, context and tone – with a proven ability to craft compelling headlines on live and news stories.
  • Proven understanding of the formats, tools, and techniques used to produce rolling news coverage including live blogs, text news stories and video clips and edits for digital platforms.
  • Proven awareness of the distinctive nature and requirements of live digital coverage.
  • Experience of using curation tools, social media, search and audience data to improve digital storytelling, broaden our editorial agenda and reach new audiences.
  • A track record of covering the UK and international news agenda so you can work swiftly and make decisions under pressure on big global and UK stories.
  • Excellent editorial judgement and a proven understanding of the BBC’s editorial values.
  • The ability to lead small groups of journalists in coverage and experience of working remotely with teams in different departments and/or regions.
