Lead Platform Engineer

Our client, a major UK retail bank, provides every day banking services to over 17 million retail customers. The banks expertise and services span across Business Services, Corporate banking, Wealth Management, Group Functions, Retail and Investment Banking.

On behalf of this organisation, AMS are looking for a Lead Platform Engineer for a 6 month contract based in London with remote work available (hybrid).

Purpose of the role:

We are looking for a highly skilled Lead Platform Engineer to drive the modernisation and strategic evolution of our Franchise Platform. This role is central to delivering innovation, simplifying the technology estate, reducing cost, and accelerating route to live timelines while increasing the frequency and reliability of delivery across the organisation.

The role requires strong technical depth in Python, SQL and Cloud based technology alongside the ability to operate confidently in high pressure, fast moving environments with constant change. You will also be responsible for shaping cloud infrastructure patterns, delivering proof of concepts, and strengthening CI/CD capabilities across the platform.

What you'll do:

• Lead the strategic evolution of the Franchise Platform, driving innovation, simplification, and engineering excellence.
• Reduce cost and accelerate delivery by improving platform efficiency, automation, and engineering workflows.
• Increase deployment frequency and shorten route to live timelines through modern CI/CD practices and platform optimisation.
• Drive adoption of strategic technologies including EDT and Data Mesh Architecture.
• Strengthen data management capabilities and ensure alignment with DMOP principles.
• Design and deliver migrations from legacy architectures to a modern cloud aligned tech stack.
• Shape and enhance cloud infrastructure patterns, ensuring scalability, resilience, and operational excellence.
• Lead proof of concept initiatives to validate new technologies, patterns, and platform capabilities.
• Provide hands on engineering leadership with strong proficiency in Python, AWS, and SQL.
• Collaborate with cross functional teams across engineering, data, architecture, and operations.
• Champion continuous improvement, engineering best practice, and platform wide technical uplift.

The skills you'll need:

• Proven experience as a Lead Engineer, Principal Engineer, or Platform Engineering Lead in large scale or regulated environments.
• Strong hands on technical expertise in Python, AWS, SQL, and cloud native engineering.
• Experience designing and delivering cloud infrastructure and platform level services.
• Strong background in CI/CD, automation, and modern software delivery pipelines.
• Experience delivering proof of concepts and validating emerging technologies.
• Deep understanding of modern data architectures, including Data Mesh and enterprise data strategies.
• Familiarity with DMOP or similar data governance frameworks.
• Experience leading migrations from legacy to modern cloud based architectures.
