Job Description - Clinical Science Manager, National Hypertension Control Initiative

Due to the current pandemic, daily travel is minimal and voluntary to ensure the health and safety of staff. There is no overnight travel currently. In the future, this position may resume daily and/or overnight travel. All AHA offices are closed and staff are currently working from home. Offices will be reopening on a part-time basis in September 2021 and a full-time basis in January 2022.

**Responsibilities**

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a **Clinical Science Manager, Hypertension** in our **National Center** office. Location of the selected candidate is flexible provided location allows for effective and cost-efficient travel.

In this role, you will provide direction and guidance to the AHA National Hypertension Control Initiative (NHCI) team and NHCI- funded clinical care teams related to the science of cardiovascular health and disease, hypertension diagnosis and treatment, and implementation science.

The Clinical Science Manager interacts with AHA Science leadership and Science and Medicine Advisors and serves as the in-house expert and resource to other AHA staff with respect to hypertension.

***This is a full time, grant funded, benefits eligible opportunity. Current funding is through 12/2023***

**Essential Job Duties: **

+ Provide consultation, guidance, and review on science/clinical aspects to **National Hypertension Control Initiative (NHCI)** staff who develop and maintain public and professional programs, patient and lay publications, NHCI web sites, press releases, corporate relations and marketing materials with health and science implications and other public or professional facing activities.

+ Works with AHA colleagues to produce on-line and face-to-face educational programs, practice resources, and patient educational tools that effectively translate science and guidelines into clinical practice, public awareness, and community activities.

+ Provide staff support to NHCI science advisory bodies and serves as a clinical liaison to the American Medical Association (AMA) partnership.

+ Work with NHCI team to help develop and review content for NHCI professional, public, and community-facing website and products and ensures content is current and accurate.

+ Provides leadership, guidance, and support to both the NHCI Clinical Practice Facilitator staff and the Evaluation staff.

+ Serves as NHCI science/clinical representative/spokesperson, as appropriate and as needed.

+ Stays abreast of hypertension control science and implementation science literature.

**Qualifications**

+ RN (BSN, APN, NP), MD, DO, PhD, PA or other Advanced Degree with clinical experience in primary care or cardiovascular care in ambulatory settings, academic medical centers, hospital settings, or private research settings.

+ Minimum of five (5) years professional clinical or research experience in primary care, cardiovascular care or related fields.

+ Staff position experience in a not-for-profit and/or government sector or an active committee/board/officer member in a professional member society.

+ Superior writing & communication skills. **A publication history in peer reviewed journals or history of presentations in conference settings is a plus.**

+ Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with NHCI and other AHA staff, federal government agency and the public as part of a team.

+ Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.

+ Ability to understand, integrate and summarize scientific literature.

+ Ability work with volunteers with clinical, research, business, or community backgrounds.

+ Must be able to travel overnight approx. 25% of the time.

**Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for: **

+ Clinical experience (MD, DO, RN, APN, PhD, PA preferred) and certification in primary care, hypertension or cardiovascular disease.

+ Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems.
