Job Description - Mental Health Counselor

Job Title: Mental Health Counselor

Location: Columbia, SC

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Behavioral Health Division Manager, this individual will provide mental health counseling services to children and adults. The provider will work either in a traditional outpatient clinic or in a co-located office within a medical office. The provider will conduct bio-psycho-social mental health assessments to include DSM 5 diagnoses as well as individual plans of care for patients. The provider will conduct ongoing therapy in individual and group settings. Collaboration with other care team members to ensure a high standard of coordinated care will be a regular part of this position. The provider operates in alignment with the mission of the cooperative to provide accessible, high-quality, compassionate health care in the spirit of The Good Samaritan.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Collaboratively work with other providers as needed to for overall health of patients across the continuum of care
  • Team with patients, families, and care team members to generate solutions for behavioral change in order address current behavioral health conditions and improve overall health.
  • Complete documentation and other administrative duties efficiently
  • Provide mental health counseling using evidence-based practices to maintain a high standard of care
  • Abide by HIPAA as well as patient, organizational, and practice standards for confidentiality
  • Attend staff meetings, other work-related meetings, training, and perform other related job duties as required or requested.
  • Provide thorough bio-psycho-social mental health assessments for patients
  • Provide ongoing individual, family and group therapy to patients
  • Participate in peer reviews

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work from an accredited university.
  • Must be fully licensed as an LPC, LMFT, LMSW, LISW, or psychologist.
  • Understanding of diagnosis using current DSM and relevant evidence based treatment options
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Understanding of the health care system and its various components
  • Ability to embody the mission of Cooperative Health - Provide accessible, high-quality, compassionate health care in the spirit of the Good Samaritan
  • Ability to understand patient attitudes and needs, develop and orient program goals and concepts accordingly, and to work effectively toward their accomplishment with all staff members
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships characterized by mutual respect with coworkers and care team members
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Adaptability to continuous efforts to improve patient care
  • Eager to learn and innovate
  • Ability to work under pressure and high stress, maintain personal composure, evaluate situations and act/react appropriately, and use tact in dealing with visitors, patients, and difficult situations
  • Ability to interpret and conform program operations to applicable laws, rules, regulations, and funding source requirements according to acceptable to standards
  • Evidence of continuing education requirement met

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience working with a widely varied patient population
  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • Supervise students/interns, including shadowing, reverse-shadowing, live feedback, and written evaluations.
  • If provider is LISW: Supervise LMSWs
