What does a Telemarketer do?

A Telemarketer, also known as a Telesales Representative, is a professional whose job is to contact potential clients and customers by phone. A telemarketer uses a prepared sales script to promote a product or service by informing the customers about its features and prices. They have a thorough understanding of the product and can provide answers to the common queries of the customers. The main target of a telemarketer is to generate sales for the company either by cold calling or by answering the enquiries of potential customers. A telemarketer generally works in a call centre and is usually located in an open floor office with a group of other representatives.

Responsibilities of a Telemarketer

Some of the expected duties that are required to be performed by a Telemarketer include:
• Making phone calls to potential customers using a given phone directory • Preparing the script to provide all the relevant information • Answering the queries regarding products or services • Maintaining detailed records of incoming and outgoing calls • Asking relevant questions to analyze the requirements of customers • Recommending products based on their needs • Recording feedbacks and following up with the potential customers • Maintaining a confidential record of customer’s personal information • Finalizing sales and informing the concerned department • Meeting projected sales targets • Properly dealing with complaints or doubts • Scheduling appointments for sales staff to meet potential customers, if required • Conducting market surveys to collect data about potential clients

Requirements of a Telemarketer

The desirable qualifications for a Telemarketer position are:
• High School Diploma or equivalent • Previous experience in Customer Service or Telemarketing • Good understanding of sales and marketing principles and strategies • Proficiency in communicating over the phone • Demonstration of strong interpersonal skills • Having good phone etiquettes • Ability to learn about new products and services quickly • Good time management skills • Ability to work as a team player • Good negotiation skills • Stress tolerance and patience • Proficiency in basic computer applications
