Job Description - Aboriginal Health Liaison Officer

About the Ngarra Jarra Aboriginal Health Unit 


Ngarra Jarra, which means healing, supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Patients, their families and carers while they are in our care through cultural support, advocacy, liaison and discharge planning. Our small but dedicated team works in partnership with multidisciplinary teams across the hospital who are committed to providing culturally safe, patient-centred care for mob.


 


About the role 


As the Aboriginal Health Liaison Officer (AHLO), you will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Patients, their families and carers in accessing care, as well as during their time in hospital. We are currently recruiting for multiple positions within this role.


 


A regular day will see you:   



  • Visit wards and spend time with patients, their families and carers.

  • Help patients access services both internally and externally to Austin Health.

  • Contribute to project work with Ngarra Jarra and the broader team.

  • Participate in opportunities to visit other hospitals and engage with community.


 


About you 


You will be someone with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You’ll bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.


 


To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:



  • Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

  • Experience supporting and advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

  • Strong understanding of cultural safety principles.

  • Knowledge of Aboriginal health issues and Victorian health systems.

  • Ability to build respectful relationships with ACCOs and stakeholders.

  • Effective communication and advocacy skills.

  • Capacity to work collaboratively and manage competing priorities.
