Job Description - Casual Pastoral Practitioner

St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s Pastoral Services team is inviting applications for a Casual Pastoral Practitioner position from caregivers who are currently undertaking, or working towards, a relevant tertiary qualification.

The Pastoral Practitioner is an integral member of the multidisciplinary Pastoral Care team, providing holistic pastoral services to patients and clients, and is responsible for the provision of emotional and spiritual support, theological reflection, ritual facilitation, faith/belief integration, establishing pastoral therapeutic relationships, trauma and grief counselling and emotional intelligence.

The Position:

  • Deliver compassionate, holistic spiritual care by assessing and responding to patients’ and families’ needs through active listening, emotional intelligence, and theological reflection.

  • Work with patients, families and the multidisciplinary team to develop and deliver personalised spiritual care plans, advocating for patient needs and supporting informed decision-making.

  • Effectively assess, prioritise and respond to referrals, identifying risks (including mental health and trauma) and escalating concerns in line with policies and procedures.

  • Lead and facilitate prayer, worship, and meaningful rituals for patients and clients, while contributing to the continuous improvement of pastoral practices.

  • Provide compassionate support to patients and families experiencing grief, loss, and bereavement, responding to complex emotional needs with sensitivity and care. This includes delivering bereavement support in line with best practice and organisational protocols, contributing to broader programs, and applying contemporary grief theories to guide practice.

You will have completed, or are currently working towards, a relevant tertiary qualification in fields such as social work, counselling, pastoral care or nursing, and/or have prior experience in pastoral care within a healthcare or similar setting.

You are a compassionate and adaptable professional with a proven ability to build meaningful pastoral relationships across diverse cultural, faith and social backgrounds. You demonstrate flexibility to support evening, weekend and on-call requirements, and hold a current First Aid certificate.

  • Casual Hourly rate: $51.60 to $66.24 (incl. 25% loading), plus 12% superannuation
