Job Description:

  • Salary: $83,554 - $85,530 p.a. + Super + Salary Packaging

About the role

  • Review discharged patient records (paper and electronic) to accurately assign ICD-10-AM and ACHI diagnosis and procedure codes and determine DRGs using 3M Coding and Grouping software, ensuring compliance with Australian Coding Standards and NSW Health policy.

  • Liaise effectively with clinicians and health professionals to clarify clinical documentation, complete coding queries, and support accurate, timely and standardised clinical coding outcomes.

  • Maintain and update key clinical coding and quality systems, including IRIS Disease Index (cancer notifications), PICQ and RISQ indicators, and identify Hospital-Acquired Complications (HACs) and cases requiring Clinical Review.

  • Participate in clinical review processes, utilisation reviews, HAC reviews and quality improvement initiatives (including EQUIP), contributing to improvements in data quality, funding accuracy and patient safety.

  • Support the Coding Manager through participation in coding audits, mentoring and training of new coders, attendance at clinician–coder meetings, and ongoing professional development to maintain contemporary coding knowledge.

  • From mid-2026, Health Information Services will commence scanning medical records, creating opportunities for Clinical Coders to work some days from home, supporting flexible working arrangements while maintaining high-quality coding standards.

About you

  • Completion of a recognised clinical coding course (HIMAA, OTEN) or a relevant tertiary qualification in Health Information Management, and/or demonstrated relevant clinical coding experience.

  • Demonstrated experience and competence in clinical classification using ICD-10-AM, with a thorough understanding of the Australian Coding Standards.

  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, with the ability to accurately interpret clinical documentation across a range of specialties.

  • Experience using Solventum Coding and Grouping software, supported by strong PC and general computer skills.

  • Excellent communication skills and high attention to detail, enabling accurate coding outcomes and effective resolution of coding queries.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently in an unsupervised environment and collaboratively within a team.
