Job Description - Clinical Nurse Specialist - NICU

Your role at St John of God Subiaco Hospital

St John of God Subiaco Hospital is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our dynamic and caring Neo-Natal ICU team.

Ward 34 NICU is a 26-bed high-dependency nursery providing specialist care for infants from 30 weeks' gestation. Renowned as one of the leading neonatal units in the state, the service delivers exceptional outcomes through a team of highly experienced neonatologists and skilled nursing staff, equipped to manage complex newborn conditions. The nursery features advanced, state-of-the-art technology to closely monitor and support the health and development of premature and vulnerable babies.

This is a key leadership role where you will be responsible for the delivery of patient centred care within the specialty of Neonatal Intensive Care to achieve optimal patient outcomes within allocated resources whilst supporting and promoting the Mission and Values of St John of God Health Care.

In collaboration with the Nurse Managers and Deputy Director of Nursing, the Clinical Nurse Specialist will be responsible for improving and maintaining standards, developing solutions and delivering outcomes consistent with service and organisational imperatives and targets. This includes the provision of leadership, clinical performance monitoring, policy review and development, development and delivery of clinical education, implementing changes to clinical practice and initiating research and quality improvement activities.

The role is offered on a Permanent Part Time basis, working 32 hours per week

The Position:

  • Delivers advanced, evidence-based nursing/midwifery care in line with NMBA standards, regulations, and scope of practice.

  • Provides expert clinical leadership and acts as a key resource in planning, implementing, and evaluating complex patient care.

  • Partners with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality, person-centred care and patient safety.

  • Leads education, training, and mentorship to support best practice across the multidisciplinary team.

  • Drives quality improvement, risk management, and benchmarking activities to enhance clinical outcomes and standards of care.

  • Contributes to service development through policy input, data reporting, equipment procurement, and participation in key committees.  

You will hold registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife and demonstrate significant knowledge, experience and leadership in the specialty of Neonatal Intensive Care.

To succeed you will demonstrate well developed interpersonal and communication skills and have a knowledge of research principles and demonstrated skills in clinical teaching.
