Job Description - Consultant Radiologist - Regional Tertiary Hospital | North Qld

Description

CONSULTANT RADIOLOGIST — REGIONAL TERTIARY HOSPITAL | NORTH QUEENSLAND Permanent Full-Time | Competitive Queensland Health Remuneration | Overseas-Trained Specialists Welcome

The Opportunity

We are recruiting on behalf of a leading public tertiary referral hospital in North Queensland, seeking an experienced Consultant Radiologist to join a well-established and expanding Medical Imaging Department on a permanent full-time basis.

This is a rare opportunity to take on a substantive staff specialist role in a busy, fully equipped department — delivering high-impact diagnostic services across a broad and diverse patient population in one of Queensland's most dynamic regional centres.

The Hospital

This 320-bed tertiary referral facility serves a catchment population of approximately 135,000 across a large geographic region, including metropolitan, rural, and remote communities. The hospital underwent a major $405 million redevelopment and now operates as a comprehensive, modern health service offering a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient care — including a 24-hour emergency department, intensive care, oncology, cardiac services, surgical services, orthopaedics, renal, paediatrics, women's health, and more.

As the principal referral centre for its region, the hospital attracts complex, high-acuity cases that provide genuine clinical breadth and professional challenge.

The Medical Imaging Department

The department is a full-service, high-volume medical imaging unit operating across a wide range of modalities:

  • General Radiography (CR and DR)
  • Computed Tomography — including Dual Source CT
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Ultrasound
  • Interventional Fluoroscopy
  • Cardiac Catheter Laboratory
  • Theatre Imaging (II)

The department is well-resourced with modern equipment and supports a multidisciplinary team including radiologists, radiographers, and sonographers. The imaging team currently includes consultant radiologists, sonographers, and RANZCR-accredited registrars, providing a collegial and well-supported working environment. The role offers genuine variety — from routine diagnostic work through to interventional and subspecialty reporting — with access to Queensland Health's broader networks for peer collaboration and CPD.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reporting across all imaging modalities appropriate to scope of practice
  • Providing specialist consultation and clinical advice to referring teams
  • Participating in departmental quality, governance, and teaching activities
  • Supporting training of junior medical staff and registrars where applicable
  • Contributing to after-hours on-call arrangements as rostered

What's on Offer

  • Competitive Queensland Health Staff Specialist / Senior Staff Specialist remuneration
  • 5 weeks annual leave + professional development leave
  • Salary packaging options
  • Generous relocation assistance for interstate or international candidates
  • Accommodation support available for suitable candidates
  • Access to Queensland Health professional development programs
  • Supportive, collegiate team environment
  • Exceptional lifestyle — quick gateway to the Whitsundays, offering world-class beaches, reef access, a strong community feel, and an affordable cost of living

Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Fellowship of RANZCR (FRANZCR) — or eligible for specialist recognition via AHPRA
  • Broad general radiology reporting capability; subspecialty skills an advantage
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Commitment to high standards of patient care

Overseas-Trained Specialists — Expedited Pathway

We actively support internationally qualified radiologists in navigating the AHPRA specialist recognition process. Depending on your qualifications, training, and country of origin, you may be eligible for the Expedited Pathway — which offers a streamlined assessment for specialists whose training is deemed substantially comparable to Australian standards, significantly reducing the time to full registration.

Our team provides personalised guidance throughout your application, from documentation preparation through to employment commencement. If you hold fellowship with an AHPRA-recognised overseas specialist medical college, we encourage you to reach out to discuss your eligibility.
