Job Description - Design Lead - Museums & Experience Centres
Design Lead — Museums & Experience Centres
Design the spaces where stories are told.
Lead spatial design development from concept to construction for museums and experience centres across Australia.
About Xzibit
Xzibit is an Australian design house for museums, galleries, and experience centres. We are storytellers. We design and deliver everything from national museums to small-town local history galleries — displays, spaces, experiences, and stories.
About the role
You'll be the primary design executor on our projects: taking creative concepts from the Creative Lead and developing them into concept drawings, 3D renders, and detailed design documentation ready for construction. A good week might mean building renders for a client presentation, resolving detailed design for fabrication, and working with project managers to keep everything on track.
This is a hands-on design role for an experienced spatial designer who loves the craft — not a step away from the drawing board. You'll report to the Head of Museums & Experience Centres and lead a small team including a Graphic Designer.
What you'll be doing
Translate creative concepts into concept drawings, 3D renders, and detailed design documentation
Produce high-quality 3D visualisations, mood boards, and design presentations for client approval
Progress designs through every stage, from first concept to construction-ready documentation
Ensure designs meet Australian Standards, Safety in Design best practice, and accessibility requirements
Review team output and give clear, actionable feedback to keep quality consistent
Schedule and manage design tasks across the team, working with project managers on timelines and resourcing
Support and develop the designers in your team through on-the-job guidance
What you'll bring
Must have:
Solid experience in spatial, exhibition, or environmental design — taking projects from concept through to detailed design and construction
Advanced skills in Sketchup 3D modelling, rendering, and design documentation software including Indesign and Adobe Suite
Working knowledge of Australian Standards and Safety in Design principles as they apply to built environments
The ability to run multiple projects at once and keep them on time and on budget
Clear communication — with clients, fabricators, project managers, and within the team
Nice to have:
Experience designing for museums, galleries, visitor centres, or branded environments
Experience mentoring or coordinating other designers
What we offer
Work that makes a difference in the real world — spaces the public visits, not decks that sit in a drawer
A collaborative team where your ideas directly shape projects and company growth
A team that shares knowledge generously and pitches in wherever needed
Annual professional development for every team member
competitive salary, performance based bonus, plus some great perks like flexible work and cool social events
How to apply
Send your CV and a portfolio showing spatial design work from concept through to detailed documentation.
Applications without a portfolio won't be considered.
We will be reviewing candidates as they apply - we are keen to appoint someone for this role ASAP. - could it be you?
