AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.  Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

As an Engineer in AEMO’s System Planning team, you will apply your technical expertise to assess power system capability and develop solutions that support current and future stakeholder needs. You will analyse system performance, generate insights, and provide advice to senior engineers, management, and external stakeholders.

AEMO’s System Planning function focuses on the efficient medium- to long-term planning of the power system to ensure security and reliability across the National Electricity Market (NEM). The team delivers critical work including the Integrated System Plan (ISP, the 20-year blueprint for the east coast power system, alongside key system security assessments such as System Strength and Inertia Reports. Our analysis informs major infrastructure investment decisions and supports industry and government stakeholders in shaping the future energy system.

In this role, you will apply strong engineering judgement and power system fundamentals to navigate the complexity and uncertainty of the energy transition. Your work will span detailed technical analysis, high-level problem-solving, and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders. This is a critical role in engineering a secure, reliable, and efficient future power system with high renewable energy integration.

What you will be doing

  • Provide expert engineering analysis and advice to support AEMO’s power system planning, applying sound judgement to navigate uncertainty, limited information, and diverse stakeholder needs.

  • Deliver technical support on electricity planning and system performance to ensure safe, secure, and reliable operation of the power system.

  • Contribute to key planning publications, including the Integrated System Plan (ISP), Electricity Statement of Opportunities (ESOO), and system security reports.

  • Prepare clear, high-quality reports and insights on network capability, system performance, and planning issues for management and project teams.

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver strategic planning outcomes, while supporting continuous improvement of processes and fostering a positive team culture aligned with AEMO values.

What you will bring to the role

  • Tertiary qualification in relevant disciplines (mathematics, operations research, engineering, physics etc) and ideally relevant industry experience.

  • Experience using power system analysis tools (e.g. PSS®E, PowerFactory, PSCAD), including load flow and fault level studies, supported by sound knowledge of power system operation and design.

  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis, modelling, and automation of engineering or simulation tasks.

  • Strong analytical and technical skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and some programming or data analysis capability.

  • Highly organised and self-motivated, with the ability to manage competing priorities, contribute to team outcomes, and demonstrate behaviours aligned to AEMO’s values and culture.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options

  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.

  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.

  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).

  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
