Division: System Design

Department: Victorian Power Systems Analysis

Reference number: 13091

Engagement type: Permanent

AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.  Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

AEMO’s System Design division plays a central role in planning the power system as Australia undergoes rapid transformation. With the shift to renewable generation and widespread electrification, the number of new transmission and distribution projects is growing fast.

Victorian Power Systems Analysis is a division within the System Design department which is focused on efficient planning and development of the Victorian Electricity Transmission Network in partnership with VicGrid. Victorian System Integration and Control is a team of Power Systems and Protection engineers responsible for delivering quality network planning analysis and technical advisory services for the Victorian Declared Shared Network to ensure that the investment needed as the power system transitions to achieve net zero emissions can be reliably and securely integrated in the existing network.

As an Engineer within the Victorian System Integration and Control team, you will develop and maintain network asset power system models, including remedial action scheme models, and lead power system modelling and analysis associated with scoping and delivering network investment, inter-network testing, and project integration to deliver a safe, secure, and reliable supply of electricity. You will also assist with system normal limit equation development for the Victorian transmission network.

What you will be doing

  • Review Victorian system normal limit equations and special control schemes, providing high-quality and timely limit advice and control scheme proposals.

  • Undertake simulation and analysis of the Victorian transmission network using specialised tools (PSSE/PSCAD).

  • Interpret simulation outcomes to draw conclusions and deliver robust recommendations for project scoping, delivery, system integration, and network augmentation impacts.

  • Review and approve inter-network testing and project commissioning plans to enable network augmentation capacity release.

  • Prepare clear, high-quality communications and engage effectively with stakeholders while managing multiple projects, risks, and priorities.

What you will bring to the role

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering with a power system focus.

  • Strong understanding of the Victorian power system, with experience in power system modelling and analysis tools (e.g. PSS/E, PSCAD, Mudpack, SCADA/EMS).

  • Experience analysing credible and non-credible contingencies, including steady state and dynamic studies.

  • Industry experience in transmission network planning or system integration, with exposure to network operations, testing, commissioning, and inter-network testing.

  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organisational skills, with the ability to manage change, prioritise work, and maintain high accuracy and attention to detail, alongside sound knowledge of AEMO functions and the regulatory environment.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options

  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.

  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.

  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).

  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
