Job Description - Environmental Specialist


About the role

 


Band 5 - base salary from $125,837 per annum (plus super) - total package to be negotiated with successful candidate based on skills and experience 


TasNetworks is seeking an experienced Environmental Specialist – Major Projects to support the planning, delivery and operation of major infrastructure projects across Tasmania. In this role, you will provide specialist environmental advice, strengthen contractor environmental performance, and help ensure TasNetworks meets its environmental obligations across all phases of project delivery.


Working closely with project teams, contractors and stakeholders, you will play a key role in environmental risk management, compliance, assurance and incident response. Your work will directly contribute to safe, sustainable and responsible project outcomes that protect Tasmania’s unique environment.


 


What you’ll do



  • Provide specialist environmental advice to project teams, ensuring alignment with project approvals and legislative requirements.

  • Identify, assess and support the management of environmental risks and issues across major projects.

  • Undertake environmental inspections, audits and assurance activities to verify compliance with approvals, permits and TasNetworks standards.

  • Work closely with contractors to ensure environmental obligations are understood, implemented and continuously improved.

  • Monitor environmental performance and support the preparation of reports, metrics and compliance documentation.

  • Lead investigations into environmental incidents and non‑conformances, identifying root causes, corrective actions and improvement opportunities.

  • Assist with environmental approvals, permits, management plans and regulatory reporting requirements.

  • Develop strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, contractors, consultants and regulators.

  • Deliver environmental training, awareness and capability‑building initiatives across project teams.

  • Represent the Environment & Sustainability Team in project forums and stakeholder meetings.

  • This role will be based in the north west of the state and require some travel and occasional after‑hours work.


About you

 


You are an environmentally minded professional who thrives in a project environment and enjoys working collaboratively to achieve high standards of environmental performance. You bring strong technical capability, sound judgement and excellent communication skills. We are seeking a person who thrives in the Hi-Vis and enjoys a mix of site and office-based work. Whilst support will always be available, someone that can work independently and with autonomy will be best suited to this role.


You will bring:



  • A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • Three to five years’ experience in environmental management, ideally within infrastructure, construction, utilities or major projects.

  • Strong knowledge of Commonwealth, State and Local Government environmental, planning and heritage legislation.

  • Understanding of environmental management systems, approvals and compliance obligations.

  • Experience supporting environmental audits, inspections, assurance activities and incident investigations.

  • Experience working with contractors and project teams in construction or operational environments.

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Well‑developed written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical reports.

  • Demonstrated problem‑solving skills and a pragmatic, risk‑based approach to decision‑making.

  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a high‑performing team.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
