Simulated Patients are recruited from the community, and some are trained actors. They represent different parts of society and vary in terms of age, culture, language, ethnicity and life experience. Upon joining the program, Simulated Patients become casual employees of the University and are paid to attend training sessions as well as their simulated patient activities.
Simulated Patients play an important part in medical education providing a unique "patient" perspective to training. As a Simulated Patient, you will play many different scenarios to aid in the teaching of the medicine and allied health students and other University Faculties. This can be through verbal interactions or involve a physical examination component.
Key responsibilities will include:
Provide a consistent level of performance in a role play environment as a simulated patient and adhere to patient script for the purposes of student learning/assessment.
Follow specific directions and guidance provided by the Simulated Patient Coordinator to ensure simulated experience is appropriate to the situation.
Adhere to the timeframes allocated for the simulated patient session.
Attend, when required, training sessions to learn specific skills, e.g. physical examinations, responses, movements etc. to better facilitate the scenario that will be performed.
Provide specific feedback when required – for both students and fellow peers.
This role is subject to the University’s Code of Conduct.
Given the nature of work required, there are some inherent requirements that are specific to this role, including (but not limited to):
Sound communication skills, with an emphasis on the ability to listen.
Good English speaking and comprehension skills.
Reliable and punctual.
Ability to be clear and concise with directions and feedback.
Ability to display a caring/empathetic/relaxed/calm nature.
Ability to learn and repeat a role play consistently.
Ability to give and accept feedback and modify role play to improve performance.
Effectively interact with colleagues, students and other professionals in an unbiased and respectful manner.
Ability to ensure that all learning materials are kept in confidence and not shared with any other party.
