Job Description - Genetic Counsellor


Role Type: 12-month full time contract
Salary: Attractive salary plus superannuation (commensurate on experience)

The opportunity:

We are seeking a Genetic Counsellor to join our team, providing genetic counselling services across VCGS regional clinics and genetics clinics based at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH). The role involves working within weekly general genetics clinics and a range of multidisciplinary clinics in partnership with RCH specialties, including cardiology, dermatology, nephrology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, and orthopaedics. This position offers the opportunity to work with diverse patient groups and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary healthcare teams in a dynamic clinical environment, including a translational research project, Gene-STEPS, which provided rapid trio genome sequencing to children with early onset epilepsy.

What you’ll do


 



  • Genetic counselling and support to clients attending VCGS clinics at RCH and regional Victoria. This includes intake calls, appropriate file preparation, documentation of the pedigree, identification of genetic counselling and psychosocial needs of clients, timely documentation of genetic counselling activities in the medical file, and appropriate practical and psychosocial follow up of clients.

  • Effective co-ordination of and participation in clinics, including travel to Regional clinics when required

  • Critical appraisal of appropriate medical, genetic and genetic counselling literature to prepare for clients, including ability to synthesise information about medical conditions and communicate it to clients, interpretation of laboratory reports, including variant interpretation (in conjunction with Clinical Geneticists, laboratory scientists and/or other medical specialists, as necessary).

  • Completion of patient correspondence (as required) in a timely manner.

  • Provision of education, written material and/or information forums, as appropriate, for clients, hospital staff and health care providers.


 


What you’ll bring


 



  • Master of Genetic Counselling that fulfils the academic requirements for Member/Fellow status of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia

  • Applicants with 2 years or more experience in a clinical setting, and/or pediatric experience, will be viewed favorably.  

  • Knowledge and understanding of genetic counselling, including medical, genetic and psychosocial aspects

  • Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Work with sensitivity to one’s own values and those of others

  • A willingness to show high motivation, in order to establish priorities, set and maintain deadlines with a demonstrated ability to use initiative

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
