Grid Portfolio Optimisation Team Leader – Permanent Full Time – Perth CBD

Also open to maximum term opportunities

Shape the future of WA’s energy network

At Western Power, we’re transforming the grid to support a cleaner, more flexible energy future. This is a rare opportunity to lead a high-impact team at the centre of that transformation—optimising how billions in network investment decisions are prioritised, planned and delivered.

As Grid Portfolio Optimisation Team Leader, you’ll lead the development of our medium-term network plan (10-year horizon), balancing customer outcomes, risk, affordability, regulatory requirements, and long-term system evolution.

You’ll work across engineering, finance, asset management and energy transition—bringing together diverse expertise to shape one of the most critical investment programs in the state.

Your Role in Action

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, building capability, supporting development, and creating clear succession pathways

  • Own the 10-year network plan, ensuring it is robust, optimised and responsive to changing customer, system and regulatory needs

  • Translate strategy into delivery, managing the pipeline of business cases to enable efficient and timely execution of works

  • Drive cross-functional alignment, partnering closely with Asset Management, Energy Transition & Sustainability, Finance and Operations

  • Lead the annual network investment plan, coordinating SMEs to balance risk, performance, affordability and deliverability outcomes

  • Influence decision-making at the highest level, securing approval of near-term network plans and clearly articulating trade-offs and priorities

  • Provide technical leadership on investment optimisation, shaping frameworks, processes and tools that guide network investment decisions

  • Champion governance and compliance, ensuring alignment to the Asset Management System and Investment Governance requirements

  • Own and evolve grid modelling capability, acting as product owner to develop tools that test customer, risk and financial outcomes across scenarios

  • Enable the future grid, supporting strategic initiatives such as modular networks, standalone power systems and undergrounding programs

  • Provide forward visibility, offering insight into resource requirements, upcoming work and network performance outcomes to internal and external stakeholders

  • Contribute to capital and operating expenditure strategy, supporting financial planning across Asset Management and Grid Transformation

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Commerce, Engineering, Finance, Project and/or Construction Management, or related discipline

  • Extensive experience in a large-scale Asset intensive organisation, preferably within the government utility sector or similar industry

  • Highly developed written, verbal, influencing and presentation communications skills with experience engaging across all levels of management

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of network utility regulation and the requirements to justify and develop prudent transmission and distribution programs and projects

  • Strong commercial and financial acumen, analytical skills and sound experience working with risk management frameworks and processes

  • Demonstrated people management skills and ability to motivate and lead a team through providing technical leadership

  • Demonstrated experience building and utilising modelling tools to test business outcomes arising with strategic options analysis

  • Sound understanding of fundamentals of project management (preferably with PM and/or sponsorship experience).

  • Interaction with others with a track-record of positively influencing, developing and motivating people and building a proactive, supporting culture

By joining Western Power, you will contribute to powering a cleaner energy future. We are dedicated to fostering career development and promoting a healthy work-life balance, empowering you to drive innovation as we develop a network that will serve the Western Australian community for generations. You will also benefit from a range of perks and opportunities, including:
