About The Role

As a Laboratory Assistant, you will be responsible for the accurate and efficient processing of pathology specimens within specimen reception, ensuring they are correctly registered, handled and dispatched for testing. This role is critical in maintaining turnaround times and supporting the delivery of reliable diagnostic results.

Key responsibilities:

• Receive, check and process specimens with a high level of accuracy


• Complete data entry and registration of specimens into laboratory systems


• Prepare and dispatch specimens to core laboratories within required timeframes


• Manage enquiries via phone and shared mailboxes, escalating where required


• Coordinate urgent specimen handling and courier collections


• Maintain laboratory records, storage and filing processes


• Participate in routine quality activities and follow laboratory procedures


• Ensure compliance with WHS policies and maintain a safe working environment

About You

Our ideal candidate may have previous exposure to a laboratory or healthcare environment or hold a qualification in pathology or laboratory skills. We also welcome applications from candidates who bring experience from roles requiring a high level of accuracy, strong time management and the ability to follow structured processes and procedures.

Above all, you communicate effectively, work well as part of a team and are comfortable working in busy environments.

Qualifications and Experience

• Previous experience working in a laboratory is desirable but not essential


• Qualifications in pathology, laboratory skills or laboratory techniques are desirable but not essential


• Experience in healthcare, data entry or roles requiring high levels of accuracy and attention to detail is highly regarded

Requirements

Ability to provide evidence of immunisation requirements, including Hepatitis B

Key Responsibilities

• Receive, sort, accession, and process patient specimens in accordance with laboratory procedures.


• Prioritise urgent specimens from the Emergency Department (ED), ICU, Operating Theatres, and inpatient wards.


• Perform specimen preparation tasks including centrifugation, aliquoting, storage, and dispatch to referral laboratories.


• Assist scientific staff across Haematology, Blood Bank, Biochemistry, and Microbiology workflows.


• Receive, store, and monitor blood products and assist with blood bank inventory management.


• Maintain laboratory consumables, stock levels, and pathology collection supplies for hospital departments.


• Perform accurate patient registration and data entry using laboratory information systems.


• Respond to telephone enquiries and provide support to clinicians, nursing staff, collectors, and patients.


• Maintain specimen storage, retrieval, and disposal processes in accordance with laboratory requirements.


• Assist with routine equipment maintenance, cleaning, and general laboratory housekeeping.


• Comply with NATA accreditation, quality management, infection control, and workplace safety requirements.


• Participate in quality improvement activities, audits, and incident reporting processes.


• Ensure confidentiality and secure handling of patient information.


• Contribute to a collaborative team environment and support the delivery of timely, high-quality pathology services to Warringal Private Hospital.
