As a Lead Civil Engineer, you’ll take full ownership of complex civil engineering projects, guiding them from concept through to delivery with expert technical leadership. You’ll drive innovative, efficient, and high-quality solutions, inspiring excellence across the team. In this role, you’ll mentor and develop engineers, foster collaboration, and champion a culture that reflects Peritas’ values, ensuring every project delivers lasting impact and exceptional value to clients.
Responsibilities:
Project Leadership & Management
Provide technical leadership for civil engineering delivery across projects or major work packages.
Establish design strategy, design criteria, technical assumptions, approval strategy and verification requirements for complex civil projects.
Lead coordination between engineers, designers, drafters, clients, authorities, contractors and other disciplines to achieve integrated outcomes.
Review and approve key calculations, models, drawings, reports, specifications, design decisions, departures and technical recommendations.
Ensure civil engineering outputs are technically sound, buildable, safe, compliant, coordinated and aligned with project objectives.
Manage technical risk, design change, authority interface issues, service conflicts, staging constraints and engineering quality across project teams.
Guide and mentor engineers and designers, supporting capability development and consistent technical standards.
Drive constructability, safety in design, sustainability, operability, maintainability, resilience and value engineering outcomes.
Represent the civil discipline in technical meetings, design reviews, workshops, authority discussions and client meetings.
Support project planning by advising on scope, resourcing, deliverables, design effort, technical risk and approval complexity.
Contribute to the improvement of civil design methodologies, quality systems, technical templates and discipline-specific procedures.
Represent Peritas in project meetings, site inspections, and client interactions, ensuring clear communication and documented outcomes.
Liaise with local councils, authorities, and stakeholders to obtain approvals and permits as required.
Design & Technical Expertise
Deliver high-quality designs, drawings, and documentation across civil disciplines, including stormwater, earthworks, roadworks, traffic management, water supply, and sewage systems.
Provide technical guidance and review outputs from junior engineers and designers to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.
Investigate engineering problems and coordinate effective solutions with the team.
Stay current with industry trends, standards, and best practices, applying them to projects.
Maintain high standards of technical accuracy, quality and attention to detail across deliverables.
Commercial Acumen
Apply commercial awareness to technical decisions, considering project scope, budget, efficiency and delivery requirements.
Support effective project planning through realistic assessment of technical effort, risks and resource needs. through rea
Contribute to project budget planning and cost management, tracking expenditure and identifying potential overruns.
Implement cost-effective solutions without compromising design quality.
Support the preparation of invoices, financial reporting, and client billing as required.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients, subcontractors, and regulatory bodies throughout project delivery through reliable technical delivery and responsive communication.
Engage with clients to understand technical requirements, manage expectations and support successful project outcomes.
Provide clear updates, address concerns, and manage stakeholder expectations effectively.
Collaborate with internal teams to ensure integrated, high-performing project outcomes.
Business Development
Support business development activities through technical input into proposals, bids and client discussions
Identify opportunities to add value to projects and strengthen client relationships through technical expertise.
Mentorship & Team Development
Mentor and develop engineers and designers, supporting capability growth through technical expertise, mentoring, collaboration and professional conduct.
Promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement of civil engineering processes, standards, and documentation.
Encourage professional development and succession planning within the civil engineering team.
Support team performance and contribute positively to team culture and capability development.
Health, Safety, Environment and Quality
Ensure compliance with internal policies and relevant ISO standards and ensure project document is retained as per HSEQ Management System
Play a key role in developing and delivering systems or project administration training for employees.
Participate in HSEQ training, report incidents, and support a culture of safety and quality.
Follow safety rules, identify and address risks, and promote a safe workplace.
Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, recommending corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
Proactively identify and assess potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and implement measures to ensure safety in design and on site
Participates in Emergency Preparedness activities e.g. fire evacuations
Innovation
Participate in discussions on work system improvements, including leveraging technology for information sharing, management, and quality control.
Actively engage in reviewing work standards and monitoring processes, initiating recommendations for improvement.
Assist clients to identify sustainable options and implications.
Bring ideas forward on how we can improve the way we deliver our partner experience.
Experience & Qualifications:
10+ years of experience in Civil Engineering
Strong technical capability in general civil engineering, comprising competency to undertake:
Stormwater Drainage Systems, Roads and Pavements, Earthworks and Site Grading, Water and Sewer Infrastructure, Utility Services Coordination, Civil Site Layout Planning and Geometry
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
Member of Engineers Australia
Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng)
