Title: Lead Data Consultant
Position: Permanent full time. You must have a current visa and full working rights in Australia.
Location: This is a hybrid role based in Sydney or Melbourne with a blend of working from home & on-site with clients.
Role Snippet: We’re looking for a hands-on Lead Data Consultant who can design and deliver production-ready data solutions for clients. We’re deliberately not looking for a narrow data specialist. Data should be your primary strength, but you’ll also bring meaningful capability in either software engineering, AI or machine learning. In a consulting environment, versatility matters - you may be leading a data platform engagement one month, contributing to an AI-enabled product the next, or helping a client modernise the software systems around their data. You’re comfortable adapting your skills to the problem in front of you.
About the role:
This is a hands-on role where you will lead the design and delivery of custom data solutions while remaining close to the technology. You’ll architect and build solutions using modern data platforms, cloud services, engineering practices and integration patterns, applying the right approach across ingestion, transformation, storage, governance, observability and consumption.
As a lead consultant, you will work directly with clients to understand their business problems, ask the right questions, and translate ambiguous requirements into well-defined, scalable solutions. You’ll shape solution approaches, define and prioritise backlogs, and guide delivery from concept through to production.
You’ll play a key role in building strong client relationships, collaborating across multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring that solutions are not only technically sound, but aligned to broader business outcomes.
You will also play a significant role in supporting DiUS’ long-term growth and influence, helping shape and grow our internal data capability, mentoring others and championing strong data engineering, architecture and delivery practices.
About DiUS:
DiUS is Australia’s premier B2B technology consulting partner, trusted to tackle our clients' most complex engineering and digital/AI transformation challenges. Our expertise is recognised in the market: we were the First Partner in APJ to attain the AWS Applied AI Competency and the First in ANZ to attain the AWS Machine Learning Competency.
We specialise in moving clients from concepts to scalable, production-ready systems. This depth of capability, backed by a GenAI Strategic Collaboration Agreement with AWS, is why we are the go-to company for high-impact projects.
Our reputation is built on long-standing trust: 95% of our business comes from repeat and referrals, and we maintain a 95% client NPS. We help organisations of all sizes solve hard engineering problems, modernise applications, and deliver new products to market with confidence.
About You:
You come from a strong technical background in data engineering, data architecture, software engineering, analytics engineering or cloud data platforms, with experience building and delivering production-grade data solutions. You’ve worked across different technologies, frameworks and environments, and are comfortable operating across the stack - from source systems and ingestion through to transformation, storage, governance, APIs, analytics and downstream consumption.
Data is your primary capability, but it is not your only one. You might have started your career in software engineering, built production applications and APIs, worked with machine learning models, or delivered AI-enabled products and platforms. What matters is that you can contribute beyond a narrow data engineering lane and bring broader technical judgement to client problems.
You have hands-on experience designing and delivering data solutions that are used by real users, systems or decision-makers. This may include modern data platforms, lakehouses, warehouses, operational data stores, streaming pipelines, batch processing, data products, data APIs, reporting layers or platform modernisation initiatives.
You understand that effective data solutions are about more than moving data from one place to another. You know how to design for data quality, lineage, ownership, privacy, security, scalability, cost, performance and maintainability. You can make pragmatic trade-offs and explain them clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
You bring a strong understanding of cloud platforms, particularly AWS, GCP or Azure, and are comfortable designing, deploying and operating data solutions in production environments. You understand how cloud-native data services, infrastructure, CI/CD, observability and security patterns come together to support robust data platforms.
You’re comfortable operating in ambiguity. You can take a loosely defined problem, ask the right questions, and shape a practical, scalable solution. You balance pragmatism with good architecture, and know when to simplify rather than over-engineer.
You’re a strong communicator who can engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Whether your experience comes from consulting or working across multiple projects, you’re able to build trust, navigate complexity, and move work forward.
You take ownership of outcomes, not just output. You care about delivering solutions that are robust, usable, trusted and aligned to real business needs.
Main Tech Skills Needed:
Experience designing and delivering production data solutions
Strong software and data engineering foundations with the ability to build real systems
Strong proficiency in modern programming and data languages, for example Python, SQL, Scala, Java or TypeScript
Experience building and maintaining batch and/or streaming data pipelines
experience building APIs / services and back end systems
Understanding of clean code, modular design, version control, testing and CI/CD
Data architecture and platform design experience
Data pipeline and integration experience
Data governance and data management experience
Cloud and production experience - you must be able to run data solutions in production in at least one cloud platform
Data storage and consumption patterns
And at least one adjacent technical area, such as full stack software engineering, AI engineering or machine learning
Main Consulting Skills Needed:
Able to navigate ambiguity; land on your feet and find the way forward
Able to problem solve; identify and shape purposeful solutions, factoring in how to integrate into a wider solution/system
Able to openly collaborate in cross-functional teams; understand and refine requirements, scope & iterate on delivery outcomes
Adaptable to different paces and environments; from the complexity of a large enterprise or influencing in a fast-paced start-up
Excellent communication skills
Able to efficiently self manage and coordinate / prioritise tasks and workload
Curious with a growth mindset, always seeking to learn and investing in own development
Passionate about spreading change through thought leadership, mentoring, meetups, writing blogs or staying active on GitHub.
A change champion who can influence and drive transformation
