Job Description - Music Therapist

  • Permanent Part Time| 2 days a week
  • Location: Redfern and Surry Hills, NSW
  • Salary: $39.9/hour + Super + Salary Packaging

Your opportunity

We are seeking a passionate and compassionate music therapist to join our Lifestyle & Wellness team within a residential aged care setting supporting residents with diverse backgrounds, including people with lived experience of homelessness, mental health challenges, dementia, substance use issues, and physical disabilities.

In this role, you will deliver individual and group music therapy sessions that support residents’ emotional wellbeing, cognitive function, social connection, and overall quality of life.

Working collaboratively with lifestyle team, you will assess resident needs, develop personalised music therapy plans, document outcomes, and contribute to holistic care planning. You will use your creative expertise to adapt programs that reflect residents’ abilities, preferences, cultural backgrounds, and personal histories.

This role will work across Redfern and Surry Hills facility.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Assess resident needs and develop tailored music therapy goals and interventions
  • Facilitate engaging individual and group sessions using approaches such as songwriting, reminiscence, relaxation, rhythm activities, and active music-making
  • Adapt sessions to support residents with varying cognitive, physical, and communication abilities
  • Maintain accurate documentation, care plans, progress notes, and clinical records
  • Collaborate with nursing, allied health, and lifestyle teams to support person-centred care
  • Promote inclusion by creating programs that encourage participation from residents who may be isolated, non-verbal, or hesitant to engage
  • Provide education and resources to staff and families on the benefits of music therapy
  • Support the integration of music into daily routines and the broader wellbeing program

Requirements for success

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in music therapy or a related field
  • Registration/certification with the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) or equivalent
  • Experience in aged care, dementia care, healthcare, or community settings (preferred).
  • Experience facilitating inclusive group music programs and therapeutic activities
  • Understanding of care planning, documentation, and multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to adapt your approach to meet individual resident needs
  • NDIS Clearance mandatory

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks.
