Senior Estimator – Transmission & HV Substation Projects

Overview

Our client, a well-established EPC contractor, is at the forefront of delivering major transmission and HV substation projects across the country. With a growing project pipeline, they are seeking a highly skilled Senior Estimator to join their team and take charge of the pricing strategy for some of Australia's most significant grid infrastructure projects.

This is a unique opportunity to work on complex, high-value projects that are central to Australia's energy transition. The role offers hands-on exposure to HV substation works and the chance to make a meaningful impact in the energy sector.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Estimator, you will be responsible for:

• Preparing comprehensive and detailed cost estimates for transmission and HV substation projects, from concept through to tender submission.


• Managing the end-to-end RFQ process, including issuing requests for quotes and negotiating with suppliers to secure the best possible pricing.


• Developing and maintaining pricing for labour, plant, materials, civil works, and subcontract packages.


• Reviewing scopes of work, drawings, and specifications to identify risks and opportunities within the estimate.


• Applying strong civil and electrical knowledge to accurately scope and price substation works.


• Building and maintaining relationships with a robust network of Australian suppliers and subcontractors.


• Collaborating with project engineering and construction teams to validate methodology and productivity assumptions.


• Leading the preparation of compliant and competitive tender submissions.


• Contributing to post-tender reviews and lessons learned to refine future estimates.


• Maintaining accurate cost databases and benchmarking data for future use.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, you will need:

• Extensive, in-depth estimating experience within HV substations (essential).


• Experience estimating Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects (desirable but not essential).


• Strong civil and electrical knowledge, with the ability to prepare full estimates across both disciplines.


• Proven experience in running RFQs and negotiating with suppliers to secure competitive pricing.


• Solid experience working with the Australian supplier and subcontractor market.


• A background in an EPC or head contractor environment.


• Proficiency in estimating software and strong Excel skills.


• The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.


• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, construction, and commercial teams.


• A relevant tertiary qualification in engineering or construction management is highly regarded but not essential if you have significant relevant experience.

Day-to-Day

Your typical day will involve:

• Collaborating with engineering and construction teams to develop accurate project estimates.


• Engaging with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing and ensure alignment with project requirements.


• Reviewing project documentation, including drawings and specifications, to identify potential risks and opportunities.


• Preparing detailed cost breakdowns and tender submissions.


• Participating in team meetings to discuss project progress and refine estimation methodologies.


• Maintaining and updating cost databases to ensure accuracy and efficiency in future projects.
