About the Role 


Join our Specialist Outpatient Clinics team in Ballarat! In this fast-paced role, you’ll plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based allied health care while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver patient-centred healthcare. This position also provides opportunities to contribute to shaping the future of care within the Directorate.



  • Deliver high-quality allied health across medical and surgical streams

  • Collaborate with patients, carers, and the community in healthcare planning

  • Support evaluation and implementation of evidence-based clinical care

  • Advocate for patients’ rights in line with relevant healthcare charters


The Ophthalmic Assistant provides clinical, administrative and operational support to the Ophthalmology service to ensure efficient delivery of patient-centred care. The role supports ophthalmologists, nursing and allied health staff in the coordination, preparation and delivery of ophthalmic clinics and procedures.


The Ophthalmic Assistant is responsible for assisting with patient flow, undertaking delegated ophthalmic assessments and diagnostic testing, maintaining equipment and supporting a safe and welcoming environment for consumers and staff.



  • Prepare patients for ophthalmology consultations and procedures.

  • Undertake delegated ophthalmic assessments and diagnostic testing within scope of practice, including:


    • Visual acuity testing

    • Intraocular pressure measurement

    • Visual field testing

    • Optical coherence tomography (OCT)

    • Retinal imaging and photography


  • Assist clinicians during procedures and treatments as required.

  • Ensure clinical rooms and equipment are prepared and cleaned between patients.

  • Monitor and report patient concerns or deterioration to appropriate clinical staff.

  • Support infection prevention and control practices at all times.

This role is paid in accordance with the Allied Health (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement
