Job Description - Psychiatrist - Intellectual & Developmental Disability

Description

Regional Queensland | Up to $549,000+ Package | Flexible Private Practice Opportunities

Are you a Psychiatrist with an interest in Intellectual and Developmental Disability looking for a rewarding clinical role combined with an exceptional lifestyle?

We are currently recruiting for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a well-established Mental Health Service within a major regional Queensland hospital. This is a rare opportunity to work within a highly supportive multidisciplinary environment while enjoying a relaxed coastal lifestyle, affordable housing, and excellent work-life balance.

You will be joining a large regional referral hospital servicing a population of more than 200,000 people across a diverse catchment area. The hospital provides comprehensive acute, mental health, specialist, surgical, and emergency services and is supported by modern infrastructure and strong executive leadership.

As a key member of the Mental Health Service, you will work alongside experienced psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, allied health professionals, and community teams committed to delivering high-quality patient-centred care.

The Role

This position focuses on providing specialist psychiatric assessment, consultation, and management for patients with Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Consultation-liaison services to community and inpatient teams
  • Specialist psychiatric assessments and treatment planning
  • Clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team
  • Participation in service development and quality improvement initiatives
  • Teaching, supervision, and mentoring of junior medical staff where appropriate

There is also the opportunity to establish private practice alongside your public appointment, with support available to assist with credentialing, referral pathways, and practice establishment.

Why You'll Love Living in Bundaberg

Bundaberg offers one of Australia's most enviable regional lifestyles.

Imagine finishing work and being just minutes from beautiful beaches, waterfront cafés, and outdoor adventures. The region enjoys a warm climate year-round, making it ideal for those who love sunshine and an active lifestyle.

Housing remains significantly more affordable than Australia's major metropolitan centres, allowing many doctors to enjoy larger homes, acreage properties, or coastal living without the financial pressures of city life.

Bundaberg is the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, offering world-class diving, fishing, boating, and island experiences right on your doorstep.

Families are particularly attracted to the area thanks to excellent schools, a strong sense of community, short commute times, and abundant recreational facilities.

Whether you're looking to raise a family, reduce your commute, enjoy outdoor living, or simply achieve a better work-life balance, Bundaberg offers an outstanding lifestyle that is increasingly difficult to find in larger cities.

Remuneration & Benefits

An attractive package valued at up to $549,000+ per annum is available, including:

  • Base salary from $187,000 – $274,000+
  • Employer superannuation of up to 12.75%
  • Annual leave loading of 17.5%
  • Professional Development Allowance
  • Paid Professional Development Leave
  • Salary packaging options
  • Motor vehicle allowance (where applicable)
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Relocation assistance available
  • Support with establishing private practice opportunities
  • Excellent work-life balance

Requirements

To be considered, you will ideally possess:

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) or equivalent specialist qualification
  • Specialist Registration, or eligibility for Specialist Registration, with AHPRA
  • Interest and/or experience working with patients with Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Strong multidisciplinary collaboration skills

Overseas-trained psychiatrists assessed as Substantially Comparable, Partially Comparable, or progressing through the specialist assessment pathway are encouraged to apply.

Whether you are currently based in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, or elsewhere overseas, we'd love to discuss this opportunity with you confidentially - [email protected]
