Job Description - Registrar - Mental Health - Midland

Your Role at St John of God Midland Public Hospital  

St John of God Midland Public Hospital provides high-quality public and private services to people living in the east metropolitan and Wheatbelt regions. Midland is one of our busiest hospitals, with demand for public services consistently increasing every year, making it a dynamic and fast-paced environment to work in.

You will develop your skills, knowledge, and confidence in the role of Registrar, working closely with a Consultant Psychiatrist within dedicated clinical teams. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with some of Perth’s leading clinicians on a 12- or 24-month contract. We currently have vacancies available for commencement in August 2026, with additional opportunities from February 2027.

The Position

  • Contributes to all aspects of clinical care of patients who are admitted to the mental health unit; commit to a team approach in the delivery of care, working closely with nursing staff, allied health professionals, members of pastoral care services, and other clinicians both onsite and offsite.

  • Lead or supervise documentation (minimum daily) of all relevant details of the patients’ care while in hospital, admission history and examination, results of investigations, care plan, interdisciplinary consultation advice, follow-up plans.

  • To see newly admitted patients within 1 hour of the client coming to the ward. To ensure that the 8-page initial assessment (MR 902) is available for every patient on admission. This may have been completed by the Community Mental Health Service, in ED, or on admission to the ward. A provisional diagnosis should be given, initial management plan and level of observations documented, and medications should be charted.

  • Registrars must ensure that the Treatment, Support and Discharge (TSD) plan is completed for every client admitted to their team (MR 907 and MR 907A). This is a live document which must be discussed with the patient on admission, through the course of the patient's stay in hospital, and prior to discharge. The patient and their Personal Support Persons when available have also to sign the document at the time of discharge. Registrars must complete the Mental Health Tribunal report for involuntary clients under the guidance of the consultant psychiatrist at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled hearing.  The report needs to be sent to the Tribunal and given to the patient, their personal support person, the Mental Health Advocate representing them, and their legal representative, if they have one.

  • Registrars must supervise the work of the RMOs working for their team and take responsibility for the physical health issues of patients under their care. They are to ensure that the Physical Examination form (MR 903) has been signed and dated by either the RMO or themselves, after a physical examination has been conducted, or, after evidence of a comprehensive physical examination in ED or elsewhere has been sighted.

  • Co-ordinate multidisciplinary management of patient, including consultation requests for Allied Health or other medical specialties and nurse case managers.

  • At times, counsel patients and family members regarding clinical findings, prognosis and care plans.

You will have registration or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA), with at least 2 years’ experience within a clinical setting. 

You will demonstrate a genuine interest in Psychiatry and be capable of supporting patient care under the guidance of a senior clinician.

  • Salary: (increase from 1st October 2026) $128,760 to $175,802 per annum, plus 12% superannuation

  • Professional development allowance (increase from 1st October 2026) $11,721 pro rata per Annum if part time
