We’re looking for a Senior Adviser – Geology Systems & Data to own the integrity, security, and availability of our drilling, sampling, and assay data. In this role, you’ll provide technical leadership across geological data systems and workflows—ensuring high‑quality, validated datasets are captured, maintained, and delivered to support exploration, evaluation, studies, resource definition, mine planning, and statutory reporting.

You’ll work closely with Geologists, Field & Drilling teams, External laboratories and drilling contractors, Technical Development, the Resource team, and IS&T at Rio Tinto.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Administering and maintaining geological databases (e.g. acQuire, Arena, SQL-based geological databases)
  • Managing data quality through validation rules, QA/QC checks, audits, and issue resolution
  • Coordinating data imports from drilling contractors, laboratories, and field teams; reconciling assays and resolving discrepancies
  • Maintaining sample ID frameworks, chain-of-custody records, assay status tracking, and historical data integrity
  • Configuring database structures, permissions, and user access; supporting integrations with tools such as Leapfrog, Surpac, Micromine, Datamine and Deswik
  • Field team IT support on logging hardware, software, systems with a component of field work
  • Producing validated datasets and reports for resource estimation, technical studies, and regulatory reporting (e.g. JORC / NI 43‑101)
  • Driving governance, backup/recovery, continuous improvement, and automation opportunities (SQL/Python advantageous)
  • Providing user support and training for database systems and data entry tools

About you:

You’re a detail-driven geoscience data specialist who enjoys bringing order, assurance, and reliability to complex geological datasets. You’re confident partnering with geologists, laboratories, and field teams, and you’re comfortable balancing data governance with practical delivery.

What you’ll bring:

  • Strong experience administering acQuire and Arena (use and setup)
  • Solid capability with SQL Management Studio and SQL-based data environments
  • Proven experience managing drilling, sampling, and assay data in mining or exploration
  • Strong knowledge of geological data workflows, laboratory data processes, and QA/QC principles
  • High attention to detail, sound judgement, and strong problem-solving capability
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to influence data standards and good practice across stakeholders

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Experience with geological data platforms
  • Exposure to drilling, assay, FTIR, QAQC and resource estimation workflows and reporting support
  • Scripting/automation skills (e.g. SQL, Python) and a continuous improvement mindset

Qualifications:

  • Degree/diploma in Geology, Information Systems, Data Management (or related), or equivalent industry experience
