About the Role

ANZ Legal’s Retail Legal team supports the development, delivery and support of innovative, customer-focused retail banking products, services and experiences.

We work closely with our business partners to help navigate complex legal and regulatory issues, manage legal risk and deliver practical solutions that support good customer outcomes. Our work sits at the intersection of law, technology, customer experience and financial services transformation.

What will your day look like?

As a Senior Lawyer, you will:

• Provide proactive and strategic legal advice on the design, development, implementation and operation of digital products, customer propositions, retail financial services and channels;


• Advise on complex legal and regulatory issues affecting retail financial services, including consumer protection, consumer credit, privacy, data use and digital delivery;


• Work closely with business, product, technology, risk, compliance and other stakeholders to identify legal issues early and develop practical solutions;


• Support strategic transformation, regulatory change, growth and customer migration initiatives;


• Provide advice on compliance with law, regulatory obligations, incidents and potential breaches;


• Help resolve complex legal, regulatory and customer issues, including issues arising from new technologies, delivery models and customer experiences;


• Draft, review and negotiate customer terms, disclosures, contractual documentation and other materials relating to products and services;


• Support the development of clear, accurate and effective customer communications;


• Proactively explain the legal and regulatory landscape and its implications for projects, products and strategic initiatives;


• Exercise oversight of legal services provided to the supported business, including coordinating specialist internal and external legal advice where appropriate;


• Contribute to the continuous improvement of legal processes, controls, precedents and ways of working;


• Deliver legal education and build legal capability across the supported business; and


• Mentor and coach lawyers and other members of the Legal team.

What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

• A law degree and admission to practise in an Australian jurisdiction;


• Significant post-qualification experience gained in-house and/or in private practice;


• Strong technical legal expertise in retail financial services, consumer credit, consumer protection, privacy, data or digital services;


• Experience advising on the development, delivery or operation of customer products, services or digital propositions;


• Excellent judgement and a demonstrated ability to identify, assess and manage complex legal risk;


• The ability to provide technically accurate, practical, proactive and commercially astute legal advice;


• A strong understanding of customer experience and the legal and regulatory considerations relevant to retail financial services or digital propositions;


• The ability to influence outcomes and communicate complex legal issues clearly to senior stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams;


• Strong stakeholder management, collaboration and relationship-building skills;


• A solution-oriented approach, with strong problem-solving and decision-making capability;


• Depending on your experience and the role grade you are applying for, experience mentoring, coaching or supporting the development of other lawyers;


• The ability to manage competing priorities and work at pace with care; and


• A positive, inclusive and collaborative approach aligned with ANZ’s values and culture.
