Senior Premium Review Officer

• $137,963.00 per annum + 12% superannuation

• Wadawurrung/Geelong based role (hybrid – 3 days in office)

About the opportunity

This role works within the Return to Work (RTW) Business Unit to provide high level technical advice and service on complex premium and claim related matters to ensure that Victorian employers are paying the correct amount of premium via an independent review process. This role will also work collaboratively across RTW to assist and support the development of programs and projects in a challenging environment.

The Senior Premium Review Officer makes choices about the best processes to apply and then develops appropriate business solutions and recommendations accordingly. There may also be a need to develop procedures or make recommendations for change based on your analysis, research, knowledge and experience. 

Note: While the position is primarily focussed on undertaking reviews of employer objections, the incumbent will play an important role in supporting all RTW teams in meeting the organisation’s performance objectives including Sustainability, RTW and Injury Prevention. This position requires flexibility, agility and responsiveness to support the achievement of business goals.

Key accountabilities

• Conduct complex reviews and provide authoritative expert written advice in respect of employer objections of premium calculations, penalties as well as decisions relating to insurance claim acceptance matters;


• Liaise directly and authoritatively with employers and their representatives during the review process (including undertaking employer site visits) as well as liaising with other branches within WorkSafe and our WorkSafe Agents with respect to employer objections;


• Represent WorkSafe in respect of premium litigation appeals with internal and external counsel as well as provide instructions to legal practitioners engaged to defend WorkSafe’s scheme interests in relation to appealed decisions at VCAT or the Supreme Court of Victoria;


• Provide mentoring support, technical support and undertaking peer reviews of decisions made by other team members;


• Identify emerging operational and policy issues potentially affecting the WorkSafe premium system and refer them to the appropriate area for resolution

Skills and experience

• Demonstrated ability to interpret complex legislation as well as hold a high-level working knowledge of WorkSafe’s premium systems and supporting legislation, including the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation & Compensation Act 2013, associated Premiums Orders and relevant case law


• Highly developed written and oral communication skills including the ability to undertake effective research and analysis and produce accurate reports and material


• Demonstrated ability to liaise in a professional manner with a range of internal and external clients/stakeholders


• Demonstrated experience as a mentor with sound leadership qualities


• Demonstrated experience in conducting presentations, training sessions or facilitating group discussions


• Excellent time management, prioritisation and organisational skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in law, economics and/or accounting (including post-graduate studies)


• CPA or CA qualifications
