Victorian Planning and Connections is accountable for planning the transmission system, making network investment decisions and connecting new generators and loads in Victoria, and ensuring these investments don’t adversely impact the power system as a whole.


 


The department plays a key role in successfully navigating the energy future by determining and procuring investment in the best interest of consumers, and by acting as a trusted advisor for Victorian Government.


 


 


About the role 



As a Specialist Engineer, you will provide expert technical leadership in power system analysis, helping shape the future of Australia' electricity system. You will lead complex studies and investigations into emerging power system challenges, develop innovative solutions to support the secure integration of renewable energy, and influence strategic network and investment decisions across Victoria. Working closely with industry stakeholders, you will deliver evidence based technical advice, drive modelling and methodology improvements, and mentor engineers to build capability across AEMO and the broader energy sector. 


Supported by an experienced leader and high achieving team, you'll leverage deep engineering expertise, lead through influence, and help navigate the rapid changes shaping Australia's energy future. The Specialist Engineer will be required to thrive in a dynamic environment, adapting quickly to change and evolving priorities.


 


What you will be doing 


 


The Specialist Engineer will lead complex power system analysis and modelling. You will assess future system needs in Victoria and renewable energy integration challenges, develop innovative methodologies and technical solutions, and provide expert advice that informs strategic network and investment decisions.  

Working closely with stakeholders across AEMO and industry, you will lead major technical projects, communicate complex findings to diverse audiences, and represent AEMO as a trusted technical expert. You will also mentor and develop engineers, champion continuous improvement, and provide technical leadership that strengthens capability across the team and broader industry.


 


What you will bring to the role


 


Education/Certificates



  • ​​​​Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.


 


Experience and Knowledge



  • Deep expertise in power system design, operation, and analysis, including power system dynamics, stability assessment, and the integration of renewable energy resources.

  • Advanced proficiency with industry-standard power system simulation and modelling tools, such as PSSE, PSCAD, and PLEXOS.

  • Strong knowledge of electricity transmission, distribution, generation, system restoration, and the operation of power and energy markets.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical projects, deliver high-quality analysis, and produce clear, evidence-based technical reports and recommendations.

  • Proven stakeholder engagement, communication, and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across industry, government, and technical teams.

  • Sound understanding of the National Electricity Market, regulatory and investment frameworks, and the role of AEMO in supporting a secure and reliable energy future.
