About the Role

The Technical Officer: Cryo-electron Microscopy provides specialist technical expertise within UOW Research Infrastructure’s CryoEM Facility, supporting high-quality research through training, technical services and hands-on user support. Focusing on single particle CryoEM, you will work closely with researchers, students and external stakeholders across workflows from sample preparation and data acquisition through to analysis and structure determination. 

Working alongside senior facility staff, you will also support the day-to-day operation of the facility, including equipment maintenance and calibration, workflow testing, troubleshooting, benchmarking and laboratory management. 

Key responsibilities:

• Deliver specialist training and hands-on support to internal and external users across single particle CryoEM workflows.
• Assist researchers with sample preparation, data acquisition and data interrogation.
• Undertake routine maintenance, calibration and benchmarking of CryoEM equipment and workflows.
• Troubleshoot instrumentation and liaise with manufacturers and service providers as required.
• Test and optimise microscopy and data analysis workflows.
• Support the effective operation of laboratory spaces, including consumables management and maintaining safety requirements to PC2 standards. 

About the Team

The position sits within UOW Research Infrastructure, a newly established strategic division within the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Portfolio. The team provides leadership and oversight of major research facilities and infrastructure across the University, ensuring researchers have access to high-quality, sustainable and impactful capabilities. 

Working closely with researchers, students, industry partners and external stakeholders, the CryoEM Facility supports cutting-edge research and provides specialist expertise and infrastructure to advance scientific discovery and innovation. 

What You’ll Bring

• Demonstrated technical expertise and hands-on experience with cryo-electron microscopy instrumentation in a research environment.
• Experience across single particle CryoEM workflows, including sample preparation, data acquisition and data interrogation.
• Demonstrated ability to train and support a diverse range of users, from students through to experienced researchers and subject matter experts.
• An understanding of PC2 laboratory requirements, WHS principles and risk management within a laboratory environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a genuine enthusiasm for supporting research and development.
• The ability to engage effectively with researchers, academics, industry partners and suppliers and work successfully within a university research environment.
• Knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology and/or a PhD in Biochemistry, Biology or a related discipline would be highly regarded.

Role Details

• Employment type: Continuing, full-time (35 hours per week)
• Level: 6/7 | 96,898 - $119,986 + 17% superannuation
• Location: Wollongong Campus
• Manual handling and lifting may be required from time to time.
