Tertiary students are provided with practical work experience opportunities to observe and perform tasks under supervision within the Universal and Enhanced Maternal Child Health Service. Opportunities will be provided to attend groups such as Babies in Hume, Breastfeeding support service and sleep and settling to complete the mandatory clinical placement component of the course.

Tertiary students studying toward a qualification in Maternal & Child Health must be a registered Nurse & Midwife, Placement is conditional upon being accepted into an approved program of study in Maternal & Child Health. The placement will be unpaid.

What you’ll be doing:

Hume Maternal & Child Health service operates and provides Universal and enhances Maternal and child health programs for children aged 0-6 years of age. A tertiary student placement in our Maternal & Child Health service will give you the opportunity to:

  • Promote health, wellbeing, safety, learning and developmental outcomes for children and their families.
  • Observe and participate in KAS consultations under supervision of MCH nurse preceptor
  • Assess the health and wellbeing of children and their care givers.
  • Collaboratively plan care with children and families including referral for internal and external supports.
  • Document in accordance with legislative requirements including any mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Observe and participate in enhanced consultations with nurses, Parent support workers, social work, outreach and Aboriginal engagement team.
  • Attend group sessions such as Babies in Hume and breastfeeding support service.
  • Attend and participate in clinical supervision and professional development.

Student Requirements:

  • AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife.
  • 5 years postgraduate experience in Nursing and midwifery
  • Hold a current Working with Children Check
  • Provide proof of enrolment into approved Maternal & Child health program of study
  • Provide a signed Student Placement Agreement including the education provider’s insurance documentation.
  • Agree to act in accordance with Council’s Employee Code of Conduct while undertaking placement.

Placement requirements: The application form will ask details to fulfill the placement requirements. This includes which university you will be applying to, if you will be studying full time or part time, and your availability to attend clinical placement.
