Application security is at the heart of digital trust. As a Junior Functional Analyst - Security Orientation, you will help bridge the gap between business needs and secure software solutions. Your work will directly contribute to building robust, compliant, and resilient applications for our client, ensuring that security is embedded from the ground up. This role is pivotal in safeguarding critical systems and enabling innovation without compromise.


What You’ll Be Doing



  • Support the preparation of functional and technical specifications focused on application security.

  • Contribute to defining and implementing the Secure Development Lifecycle (SDL) in line with industry standards and NIST best practices.

  • Collaborate with development teams to integrate security controls throughout the application lifecycle.

  • Assist in verifying compliance with security standards, internal policies, and regulatory requirements.

  • Stay current with emerging vulnerabilities, threats, and best practices in application security.

  • Participate in security awareness initiatives for internal teams.

  • Assist in the preparation, coordination, and follow-up of application security testing activities.

  • Monitor software vulnerabilities and help identify potential risks to applications.

  • Review vulnerability reports from internal and external sources, including databases and security assessment tools.

  • Document findings and communicate security risks clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.


What We’re Looking For



  • Degree in computer science, cybersecurity, information systems, or equivalent knowledge through training or practical experience.

  • Recent graduates or candidates with initial experience in functional analysis, software development, IT, or cybersecurity are welcome.

  • Curious, analytical, and eager to learn, with a strong interest in application security.

  • Ownership mindset: proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable asking questions.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams (developers, architects, analysts, security specialists).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Organized and able to translate technical topics into clear requirements or documentation.

  • Motivated to develop expertise in vulnerability management, secure software development, and threat modeling.


Technical Skills



  • Basic understanding of software development processes (Agile, DevOps).

  • Introductory knowledge of application security principles and standards (OWASP, NIST, ASVS).

  • Familiarity with authentication, access control, encryption, and software vulnerabilities.

  • Some experience with application lifecycle and development tools (Jira, Git, Jenkins).

  • Knowledge of SAST, DAST, and SCA tooling (preferably with Veracode) is a plus.

  • Understanding of secure development lifecycle procedures.

  • Awareness of security management frameworks (ISO27001, C2M2).

  • Knowledge of NIS2, NIST, or ISO27001 standards (junior level).


Desirable (Not Required)



  • Familiarity with Software Bills of Materials (SBOM) and tools like CycloneDX or SPDX.

  • Experience with vulnerability management tools (e.g., Dependency-Track).

  • Understanding of vulnerability scoring/prioritization (CVSS, EPSS).

  • Knowledge of security frameworks (ISO 27001).

  • Exposure to threat modeling and secure software architecture principles.

  • Experience with application security testing approaches and tools (SAST, DAST).


Language Proficiency



  • Professional proficiency in English is required.

  • Additional language skills (French or Dutch) are an advantage.


Other Requirements



  • This is a freelance position for a 5-month project based in Brussels, Belgium.

  • On-site presence required (remote work is not available for this role).
