Job Description - Senior Economic Policy Analyst Monetary & Financial Policy

Your role

As Senior Monetary and Financial Policy Analyst, you will be a cornerstone of EMPN’s growing Brussels team. Working closely with the Managing Director and EMPN’s Monetary Policy Expert Panel, you will help shape EU monetary debates through rigorous analysis, strategic outreach, and cross-border coordination. The role requires self-drive, vision, and experience in central banks, EU institutions, public administration, academia, or think tanks, as well as strong familiarity with monetary policy and/or financial markets and regulation. You will report directly to the Managing Director and be supported by staff in Berlin and Brussels as the organisation grows.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Coordination – Organise and coordinate the work of the EMPN Monetary Policy Expert Group, including workshops and public events. Liaise closely with our lead experts to support the development of publications – including publications for the European Parliament’s Monetary Dialogue – and related work on monetary transmission, financial markets, and EU financial architecture.
  • Research – Lead the development of EMPN’s research agenda on monetary and financial policy, including the assessment of the ECB’s policy stance and its transmission through financial markets to firms and governments. The role involves shaping research agenda and policy debates on issues such as financial conditions, inflation dynamics, euro internationalisation, the digital euro, and other questions at the intersection of monetary policy, financial markets, and EU financial architecture.
  • Advocacy – Work with EMPN teams and partners on topics at the intersection of monetary, fiscal, and energy policy, including issues related to financial markets, financial regulation, and the mobilisation of private capital for investment. Build relationships with ECB officials, ECON MEPs, financial market participants, and relevant Commission officials to increase the impact of the EMPN’s work.

Your profile

  • You have a solid understanding of monetary policy. You have strong academic knowledge paired with 4+ years of professional experience in monetary policy, macroeconomics, financial markets and regulations, or public finance You combine this with solid academic training — an advanced degree in economics (preferred), law, EU affairs, or a related discipline is required (PhD preferred).
  • You can write impactful policy briefs. You possess excellent English skills and can write sophisticated yet accessible texts. You have experience drafting policy briefs or conducting research and understand that our analyses are subject to public scrutiny, ensuring your work is accurate and conscientious.
  • You are willing to advocate for policy changes. You are prepared to engage with central banks, EU institutions, governments, academics, and the media, or you are eager to develop these skills. Engagement and collaboration with these groups are crucial to our mission.
  • You are willing to take ownership of your projects. You work independently and thoroughly and are determined to get to the bottom of things, even if that means going an extra mile or two. The team in Brussels and Berlin supports you whenever necessary or helpful, and you can also rely on our EMPN expert group and our national partners.
  • You bring strong organisational skills and a solutions-focused mindset. Flexible and constructive in your approach to challenges, you have strong attention to detail, a process-oriented outlook, and an interest in organisation building.
  • You speak fluent English and ideally both French and German; other European languages are a plus.

Not sure if this role is for you? We welcome candidates with varied backgrounds and encourage you to highlight how your unique skills align with our needs. We are open to candidates who might excel more in one area but are enthusiastic about growing in the other.

This is what we offer:

  • Contract: A permanent contract under Belgian law. 100%, or part-time negotiable.
  • Meaningful work: A chance to support the coordination of a network of policy experts and think tanks with national influence and a history of policy impact, helping it becomes more than the sum of its parts and maximising its impact in Brussels and Frankfurt.
