Internship Master: Finetuning a Large Language Model

Rapid advancements in deep learning technology have led to the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) – AI systems capable of generating context-aware, human-like responses to queries. Many of such models are publicly available, and while they perform great on general tasks, they often struggle with domain-specific tasks due to their general nature. To avoid the colossal cost of developing domain-specific LLMs from scratch, a technique called ‘Finetuning’ has recently gained traction. Here, an existing LLM is tuned for a specific task given a smaller dataset, leveraging the existing natural language processing capabilities of the multi-billion-parameter models.

At Bestmix Software we are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to provide the best possible services for our customers. As our software solutions become more advanced, new users may face a learning curve, and even experienced users might need quick answers to complex questions. Traditional documentation and support channels—such as FAQs, manuals, customer service agents—are valuable but often reactive. That’s why our next growth step is developing our own virtual assistant that will help customers navigate our software, streamline workflows, and enhance training experiences. This is where you come in.

The assignment

What you’ll do

We are looking for an enthusiastic master student with a background in data science to help us create our own virtual assistant. Your work will begin with researching and selecting state-of-the-art Large Language Models (LLMs) and identifying the most effective finetuning techniques to tailor them for our specific needs. You will then preprocess and structure the data to ensure the model can accurately understand and respond to real-world user queries. Once the groundwork is laid, you will implement and execute the finetuning process, optimizing the model’s ability to assist users effectively. Finally, you will evaluate the model’s performance to ensure it meets high-quality standards. Through this process you will gain hands-on experience, helping create a truly impactful and intelligent virtual assistant.

Your responsibilities will include

• Researching and selecting models and training procedures, backed by literature

• Preprocessing data to tailor the model(s) to specific tasks

• Implementing and executing the actual finetuning process

• Evaluating proposed model /training procedures to ensure accuracy and effectiveness

This internship will set you apart from other students by giving you:

• Hands-on experience in data visualization and dashboard development

• Practical knowledge on how to evaluate and implement scalable frameworks

• Skill development in UI/UX for data presentation

• Gain experience collaborating with a data team in a professional setting

• A concrete project to showcase to future employers, demonstrating your ability to solve practical business problems

• Data similar to that of what we would gather during an AI project

• Access to compute resources for data analysis

• Work environment where you’ll be part of our data team

What will BESTMIX Software offer you?

This internship offers a unique, hands-on opportunity to work on one of the most in-demand topics in AI—LLM finetuning. You will:

• Develop practical experience in training and deploying AI models

• Collaborate with a professional data team, learning industry best practices

• Gain experience in model evaluation and optimization

• Build a portfolio project that demonstrates your ability to apply AI to real business challenges

• Access to relevant datasets

• Access to compute resources for data analysis

• Work environment where you’ll be part of our data team
