Position Summary:
Responsible for upholding the highest standards of ethical care and welfare for research subjects at the Zoetis Research Center in Paulínia, ensuring full compliance with all company policies as well as relevant local and international regulations and legislation concerning research practices. Additional responsibilities include supporting in vivo studies, training colleagues, and providing backup in related procedures. The role also involves establishing and monitoring key welfare and care metrics across the research operations.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with area management, develop and maintain a high-quality care program to promote health, wellbeing, and regulatory compliance for research activities at the Paulínia site. Focus areas include: disease prevention, biosafety, sanitation, pest control, management practices, safe handling protocols, responsible medication use and storage, and humane endpoints.
  • Perform daily rounds throughout the site to conduct veterinary inspections, ensuring optimal welfare conditions and that teams adhere to established procedures.
  • Maintain comprehensive records for research subjects to ensure traceability and documentation of medical history.
  • Guarantee ready access to controlled and non-controlled medications for research needs.
  • In collaboration with CEUA, expand and apply knowledge regarding local regulations and Zoetis internal standards to support accreditation and sustain best practice requirements.
  • Ensure complete alignment with Zoetis policies and the laws and guidelines of relevant authorities such as CONCEA, MAPA, CRMV, and others.
  • Actively participate in committee meetings and protocol reviews, sharing relevant updates and decisions with site teams in partnership with area leadership.
  • Report and communicate any events or concerns related to research subjects according to internal protocols and external regulations, updating the global team and implementing preventive measures as needed.
  • Provide technical expertise in veterinary science to support Zoetis and VMRD objectives, meeting client needs and contributing to collaborative scientific and service outcomes.
  • Apply scientific principles and practices to the development of tools and technologies that advance research models for drug discovery and development.
  • Collaborate with project teams to support research initiatives, including protocol and model development.
  • Foster communication between VMRD and GMS, serving as a role model for the broader Zoetis organization and presenting results internally and externally.
  • Train, educate, and guide colleagues in best practices regarding clinical procedures, research handling, care, and experiment-related workflows.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, emphasizing the principles of the 3Rs wherever possible.
  • Serve as the representative of the Paulínia site on the Zoetis Global Animal Welfare Committee.
  • As part of contingency planning, support in vivo research activities when needed.
  • Proactively prevent unsafe practices by following established safety guidelines and ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine, with an active CRMV license for at least 5 years.
  • Previous technical experience with the facility's working species—poultry and rodents—is desirable.
  • Solidf experience in animal facilities or in the animal health products industry is preferred.
  • Advanced English proficiency.
  • A master’s or phD degree is desirable to provide additional technical support to the research team.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) principles
  • Strong interpersonal skills to ensure positive relationships with colleagues from other departments
  • In-depth knowledge of animal welfare and relevant regulations
  • Activities are primarily concentrated at the animal facility located in Paulínia.
  • Work is preferably performed while standing, and requires moving between multiple buildings within the facility. Access to each building that houses different species must be performed according to established standard procedures, including changing clothes, showering, and other relevant protocols.
  • The employee must be willing to work weekends and outside of regular hours as required, according to on-call schedules and veterinary occurrences.
  • The collaborator must also be available for activities outside the Paulínia site, such as meetings at Zoetis units in Campinas and/or São Paulo, visits to service providers and suppliers, as well as participation in events related to the field.
