This role is essential in providing support and ensuring equal access to educational opportunities for apprenticeship students with disabilities medical conditions and learning barriers. This hybrid role will involve providing Accessibility Advisor and Learning Strategist Services, both independently and as part of a holistic approach to support apprentices.
Relationship building is essential in the Accessibility Advisor/Learning Strategist role. They will be working closely with students, Apprentice Support Team members, faculty and service providers, both internal and external to SAIT. The incumbent will also work collaboratively to provide training and support to the above stakeholders to improve student success.
\nThe Role
Assessment and Support Planning - 40%
Informal Assessment: Conduct an informal assessment to understand the nature of a student's learning barriers, disability or medical condition and determine appropriate supports/accommodations.
Support Planning:
Develop, with the student, individualized learning strategies and accommodations tailored to the student's specific needs.
Support students in requesting appropriate AIT accommodations
Documentation Review: Review and interpret medical and psychological documentation to determine eligibility for services and to inform optimal supports.
Student Support and Advocacy - 10%
Provide students with supports and referrals to support them, from the time they express interest in SAIT apprenticeship programs, to successful employment.
Advising: Provide one-on-one advising to help students understand their disabilities, advocate for their needs and navigate their educational and apprenticeship programs.
Liaison: Act as a liaison between apprenticeship students, faculty, and staff and to ensure that accommodations are provided effectively, and that students' needs are met.
Referral to Support Services:
Refer to internal and external support services such as tutoring, mentoring, and coaching to help students develop skills to enhance their learning.
Coordinate with external agencies, such as Alberta Industry and Training (AIT), Virtual Learning Supports (VLS) and Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work (CCRW) to support accommodations and other necessary services.
Crisis Intervention: Provide support and guidance in crisis situations, ensuring students have access to necessary resources and support.
Collaboration - 20%
External Partnerships: Liaise with external organizations, such as disability advocacy groups and government agencies, to enhance support services and stay informed about best practices.
Interdepartmental Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with members of the Apprenticeship Support Team (Learning Strategists, Accessibility/Learning Strategist, Academic advisor, Student Development and Counselling, CADI Faculty Development Facilitators, Neurodiversity Specialist, Tutoring supports) to provide comprehensive support to students directly and indirectly (individually to students and provide supports for instructors to support students)
Formulate a comprehensive Student support plan, with short- and long-term goals, with the Apprenticeship Support Team
Work collaboratively with other departments, such as OTR, Funding Advisors, Career Services, to provide comprehensive support to students.
Training and Education - 20%
Faculty Training: Provide training and resources to faculty and staff on disability awareness, inclusive teaching practices, and legal obligations under Canadian disability laws.
Awareness Programs: Develop and deliver workshops and programs to promote awareness and understanding of disabilities and active learning strategies, within the apprentice community.
Compliance and Reporting - 10%
Policy Development: Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to accessibility and accommodations within apprenticeship programs.
Legal Compliance: Ensure that the institution complies with relevant legislation, including the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Alberta Human Rights Act and SAIT Policies
Reporting: Maintain accurate records, documentation and assessments, and provide reports on the usage and effectiveness of accessibility services in apprenticeship programs.
Qualifications
Minimum
Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, or disability-related field
2+ years experience working with students with disabilities, medical conditions and/or identify as being Neurodivergent
2+ years experience in interpretation of medical documentation
Strong communication, both written and verbal
Excellent organizational and time management
Preferred
Masters degree in Psychology, Education, or disability-related field
5+ years experience working with students with disabilities, medical conditions and/or identify as being Neurodivergent
5+ years experience in interpretation of medical and psychological documentation
