PROGRAM SUMMARY:


Goodacre Place Supportive Housing is a 22-unit supportive housing program with a 12-bed emergency shelter that provides both long-term housing and short-term emergency accommodation for individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.


 


SCSA has a long history of supporting people experiencing housing instability. Building on our previous shelter operations at Broadway Place, our team is passionate about helping participants and guests find stability, safety, and belonging. Through our partnership with BC Housing, we provide shelter, housing support, meals, hygiene services, life skills development, case planning, and connections to community resources. Our goal is to help individuals move toward greater independence while feeling respected, supported, and at home.


 


Goodacre Place works closely with community partners, healthcare providers, Indigenous organizations, and social service agencies to ensure participants have access to the supports they need to thrive.


 


POSITION SUMMARY:


The cook is responsible for planning for and preparing a delicious and nutritious hot dinner for 20-30 people.  The cook assists with meal service and cleans up their own dishes after the meal service.  The cook works with the Goodacre Place manager to prepare a meal plan and coordinate the food inventory to ensure adherence to the meal plan.  The cook contributes expertise, coordination, and assistance, in the production and delivery of quality meal service for SCSA. 


 


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:



  • Reports To: Site Manager, Goodacre Place

  • Direct Reports: None



RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Provide occupants at Goodacre Place Supportive Housing with 1 hot dinner meal per day, to be served between the hours of 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 pm. unless alternate arrangements have been made.

  • Store, prepare and serve meals in accordance with recognized Food Safe practices.

  • Ensure that the facilities available are adequate for heating, cooling, cooking, refrigerating and freezing food, for storing refrigerated or frozen foods, monitoring food temperature, and when necessary, controlling ambient temperature to ensure the safety and suitability of food.

  • Prevent microbial cross contamination by separating raw, unprocessed food physically or by time from read-to-eat foods, with effective intermediate cleaning, and where appropriate, disinfection.

  • Prepare wholesome, nutritionally balanced meals that will contribute to the health of the recipient by:

  • Incorporating the Canadian Food Guide Recommendations to Healthy Eating

  • Providing appropriate servings sizes

  • Using fresh ingredients as much as possible with a minimum of pre-packed/pre-prepared foods

  • Adhere to the menu proposed by Smithers Community Services Association unless changes to the menu have been made or approved by SCSA or a certified dietician.

  • Make accommodations for tenants with special dietary needs which may include but is not limited to special food items, consistency of food, sodium and sugar content. We do not provide therapeutic diets.

  • Shop for menu items on a weekly basis and adhere to the allotted budget.

  • Purchase menu items in advance for relief cooking staff.

  • Post dinner menu on board daily.

  • Provide additional meals for guests in addition to those required by the tenants, as requested by SCSA when given adequate notice.

  • Provide extra snacks for special events when requested.

  • Have appropriate procedures in place to ensure that any necessary cleaning and maintenance is carried out effectively and an appropriate degree of personal hygiene is maintained, including but not limited to fridges, freezers, counters, cupboards.



QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Experience cooking for large groups of people or in an institutional setting

  • Holds or willing to obtain Food Safe II and WHIMIS certification.

  • Knowledge of the Canadian Food Guide Recommendations to Healthy Eating.



SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



  • Ability to work effectively as a team member

  • Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with all people

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional and appropriate relationships with residents and/or their families/representatives

  • Ability to comply with safe work practices and food safe handling practices. 

  • Apply solid personal boundaries and limit setting.



ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada

  • Understand and be committed to terms of confidentiality and sign a pledge of confidentiality.

  • Undergo a Criminal Record Check

  • Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

  • Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
