Position Summary


 


Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Communications will be responsible for managing and directing the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) internal and external communications.  The incumbent supervises all AMC communication staff, creates communication strategies, and will serve as the media contact for the organization.  


 


Key Responsibilities


 



  • Conduct regular environmental scans to develop timely external communication plans.

  • Develop and maintain an internal communications protocol, including guidelines for press releases, social media, briefing notes, fact sheets, bulletins, op-eds, and speaking notes.

  • Lead crisis communications by coordinating press conferences, media statements, and related responses.

  • Promote and manage the public profile of the Grand Chief, ensuring messaging aligns with First Nations policy and legislative priorities.

  • Implement creative and effective strategies to communicate the Grand Chief’s agenda.

  • Strengthen public relations with political affiliates, AMC-mandated entities, and NGOs by coordinating events, forums, and other venues.

  • Manage freelance writers and vendors to produce communication and marketing content (e.g., radio scripts, media kits, annual reports, website copy, social media content).



  • Conduct an annual evaluation of the functions of the communications department including the communication and social media strategy and provide alternative methods to address gaps.



  • Research, develop, and implement a brand and communications strategy that reflects AMC’s mission and objectives.

  • Oversee the creation of marketing materials, including newsletters, brochures, annual reports, and event communications.

  • Lead and support staff in delivering communications activities such as media relations, marketing campaigns, advertising, direct mail, and press releases.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local media, stakeholders, and partners.

  • Oversee and supervise AMC’s website and communications calendar to ensure consistency of messaging.

  • Provide monthly reporting to the Grand Chief’s office, including summaries of past activities and upcoming priorities.

  • Develop and manage the communications budget, strategy, and annual work plan.

  • Supervise communications staff, provide coaching, direction, performance evaluations, and approval of leave/travel.

  • Collaborate with Human Resources on staff relations issues as required.

  • Contribute as an engaged team member, offering creative ideas, problem-solving, and proactive solutions with the Senior Management Team.

  • Perform additional communications-related duties and projects as required.



Qualifications


Education & Experience


 



  • Undergraduate degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, political science, or a related field.

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in regional and national First Nations policy analysis and political advisory.

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a leadership role supervising a team.

  • At least 5 years’ experience in marketing communications, public relations, or a related field.

  • Experience with intergovernmental relations.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills with a track record of delivering on time and on budget.

  • Proven ability to develop and implement communication plans that achieve measurable results.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with expertise in multimedia and visual communications.

  • Solid understanding of current industry trends and digital publishing technologies.

  • Experience defining and implementing standardized marketing and communications processes, guidelines, and policies across an organization is an asset.

  • Collaborative and solutions-focused approach to work.

  • Relevant industry knowledge is considered an asset.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to create targeted, high-quality content.

  • Strong research, interviewing, fact-checking, and proofreading skills.

  • Strong knowledge of communication practices and techniques.

  • Understanding of First Nations communities and related issues.

  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.

  • Proven ability to establish and maintain strong interpersonal relationships.

  • Ability to function effectively as a team member, demonstrating emotional stability and objectivity in changing or challenging work environments.

  • Commitment to AMC policies and procedures, with specific attention to attendance and professional ethics.

  • Ability to work flexible hours; must possess a valid Class 5F Driver’s License and reliable vehicle.
