Job Description - Director of Justice Services

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY: 


The Director of Justice Services (DOJS) contributes to the success of the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre (TBIFC) in their role of the Management team by effectively planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and managing Justice Program services and activities, in accordance with all relevant policies and procedures.


 


QUALIFICATIONS:



Education and Experience:



  • Preferred Community College, University Degree or equivalent in Social Services and/or a minimum of 5years work and/or supervisory experience in a social justice services environment.

  • Demonstrated administrative management with the ability to supervise.

  • Knowledge of the judicial system, Criminal Code, and other related federal and provincial statutes.

  • Knowledge of sentencing principles and restorative justice principles.

  • Experience in Restorative Justice and Conflict Resolution is an asset.


 


Knowledge:



  • Awareness of and appreciation for traditional Indigenous culture and the social reality that Indigenous people experience in an urban setting; knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) considered an asset.

  • Significant knowledge of the recent and historical intergenerational trauma that Indigenous people experience and the connection to psychological, physiological, social and spiritual impacts of trauma.

  • Expertise and understanding of the principals involved to provide culturally grounded trauma-informed care and wise practices within service delivery, continuum of care, and group programming.

  • Strong knowledge of services available for urban Indigenous people who are seeking judicial supports and services, including diversion, Gladue services, criminal and family court support, bail supervision, partner assault response diversion, Indigenous Peoples’ Court services, transitional supports related to incarceration, and traditional healing.

  • Knowledge of and exposure to a range of human resources activities, including: recruitment, orientation, performance management, schedule management, employee relations, and employee communications.

  • Understanding of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures, including ESA, OHSA, etc.

  • Understanding of resource and fiscal management.

  • Experience in program delivery, supervision, operations, administration and budgeting.

  • Ability to supervise and motivate a team to achieve and exceed their goals.

  • Ability to delegate, set expectations, and monitor progress of all direct reports.

  • Ability to identify measures of performance and actions needed to improve or correct performance.

  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, problem solve and make decisions.

  • Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport.

  • Ability to identify issues and implement creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems.

  • Excellent organizational and administration skills; able to set priorities under tight deadlines.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and writing skills; ability to edit and prepare reports.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including database applications.

  • Excellent file management skills, stress management and time management skills.

  • Proven work experience in managing crisis support and ability to mediate conflict.

  • Demonstrated health and safety leadership skills.

  • Demonstrated mentoring, coaching, and professional development skills.

Conditions of Employment:



  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and/or weekends.

  • Ability to travel, including overnight.

  • Must have a valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • A satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Clearance is a condition of employment.

  • Ability to maintain current First Aid / CPR certification.
