Job Description - Domiciliary Optometrist |North London or Surrey | Locum or Employed

Domiciliary Optometrist

Location: Mobile across North or South London
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
Working pattern: Monday to Friday
Part-time available
Permanent employment or regular locum arrangement considered

BlackSquare is recruiting a Domiciliary Optometrist for a growing mobile eye-care provider delivering comprehensive optometric services to patients living in residential and nursing care settings.

This is a rewarding opportunity for an Optometrist who wants to move away from a conventional high-street environment and spend more time delivering personalised care to patients who may otherwise struggle to access optical services.

The business provides a supportive working environment, modern portable equipment and an established appointment schedule. Full-time, part-time and regular locum arrangements can all be considered.

The Role

You will travel to care homes across an agreed geographical area, conducting comprehensive eye examinations and supporting vulnerable patients with their ongoing eye-care needs.

You will work alongside an experienced optical support colleague, allowing you to focus on delivering high-quality clinical care and maintaining an efficient patient journey.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting comprehensive domiciliary eye examinations

  • Assessing visual needs and identifying changes in ocular health

  • Working sensitively with elderly and vulnerable patients

  • Adapting your communication and examination techniques for patients with dementia or additional needs

  • Making appropriate clinical recommendations and referrals

  • Providing clear advice to patients, relatives and care-home staff

  • Recommending appropriate spectacles and visual solutions

  • Maintaining accurate and contemporaneous clinical records

  • Working in accordance with GOC standards and relevant NHS requirements

  • Liaising with Optical Assistants, care-home teams and other healthcare professionals

  • Using and looking after portable diagnostic and testing equipment

  • Managing your daily schedule effectively while travelling between locations

  • Supporting the continued development of the domiciliary service

  • Maintaining your professional knowledge and completing required CPD

About You

You will need:

  • Current GOC registration as a qualified Optometrist

  • A recognised Optometry degree or equivalent qualification

  • A full UK driving licence

  • Confidence working independently outside a traditional practice environment

  • Excellent clinical judgement and decision-making skills

  • A patient, empathetic and reassuring manner

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Good organisation and time management

  • Accurate clinical record-keeping

  • A genuine interest in supporting elderly and vulnerable patients

  • The ability to build positive relationships with care-home teams and patients’ families

Previous domiciliary experience would be useful but is not essential. Training and support can be provided to an Optometrist making their first move into mobile eye care.

Working Options

The role operates Monday to Friday, with no routine weekend requirement.

The business can consider:

  • Full-time permanent employment

  • Part-time permanent employment

  • Regular locum days

  • A flexible working pattern based around your availability

What’s on Offer

  • Competitive salary or locum rate

  • Monday-to-Friday working

  • Full-time or part-time hours

  • Employed or locum options

  • Established patient appointments

  • Dedicated optical support

  • Modern portable testing equipment

  • Training in domiciliary and dementia-friendly eye care

  • Professional development and CPD support

  • The opportunity to provide meaningful care to patients who need it most

  • A varied role outside the traditional high-street environment

  • Long-term opportunities within a growing mobile eye-care provider

Why Apply Through BlackSquare?

We take the time to understand the working pattern and type of opportunity you are looking for. Your application will be treated confidentially, and your details will never be submitted to an employer without your prior agreement.
