Job Description - Early Childhood Assistant

ABOUT WILLIAMS LAKE FIRST NATION (WLFN)



The Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN), or the T’exelcemc (people of WLFN) have belonged to the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation for over 6500 years. Today, the WLFN community includes a growing population of over 800 registered members who live on reserve in Sugar Cane, in nearby Williams Lake, BC, and across the globe.

POSITION


The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Assistant is accountable for assisting in the successful operations of the Little Chiefs Day Care program according to the organization’s vision, objectives, and strategic direction of WLFN. This position is responsible for assisting the efficient operations of the day care and is an advocate for early childhood education in the community. Early Childhood Assistant will report to the Early Childhood Supervisor.



Employment Type


Full time temporary, 35 hours per week.


 


Probation Period


3 months from the date of hire.


 


Education Required



  • Valid Early Childhood Education Assistant certificate or diploma OR

  • Responsible Adult Course.


 


Experience Required



  • One to Three years early childhood education.


 


Overtime Status


 Non-exempt.


 


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES




  1. Supports the organization of activities for children which encourages participants to take the initiative to learn so that they can carry these behaviors forward with enthusiasm and promote positive self-esteem.

  2. Assists with planning and delivering student curriculum including arts and craft, cultural education, language, free play, and cultural education including Shuswap culture and language.

  3. Uses teaching techniques that include modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing.

  4. Helps to ensure nutritious meals and snacks are provided; keeps facilities, equipment, and toys clean.

  5. Provides encouragement, extra help, and support to aid students in their daily routines.

  6. Encourages a safe and healthy environment for on-site and off-site activities.

  7. Administers first aid if required with valid first aid certificate, observes, and removes potential hazards; reports all incidents of child abuse to the supervisor.

  8. Provides positive behavior redirection, if necessary, without labelling the child.

  9. Follows licensing requirements.

  10. Other duties as assigned or required by ECE supervisor or ECE staff.

  11. Be able to engage in outdoor light physical activity for minimum 1-3 hours per day, in all weather conditions.

  12. Supports the mission, vision, and values of Williams Lake First Nation.

  13. Contributes to the WLFN’s ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.

Knowledge



  • Ability to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities and experiences.

  • Knowledge of First Nations language and culture.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software at an intermediate/advanced level.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Recognizes and respects all cultural diversity and understands Indigenous culture.
