You are a collaborative, scientifically grounded professional who can confidently navigate complex ecological and operational challenges. You bring a balanced perspective that supports both conservation objectives and business needs.


In this role you will provide expert guidance on wildlife, fish and biodiversity, helping ensure our operations balance ecological integrity with responsible fibre delivery. You’ll collaborate with internal teams, government agencies, and Indigenous Nations while contributing to innovative forest stewardship and research initiatives. This position can be based out of Grande Prairie, Whitecourt, Acheson (Edmonton), Cranbrook or Prince George.


 


The life of a Habitat Biologist includes:



  • Provide expert guidance to regional Woodlands teams to interpret and implement legal requirements, Indigenous Nation requests, and best available science related to wildlife, fish, and biodiversity. Support the integration of habitat and biodiversity considerations into operational forest planning and activities

  • Balance wildlife habitat needs with operational realities, including timber supply and delivered wood costs

  • Develop and deliver training programs (in-person and virtual) for staff and contractors to support compliance and certification requirements

  • Collaborate with regional teams on stakeholder engagement, including presentations, field tours, and meetings with government and Indigenous Nations

  • Assist in engagement with provincial and regional governments on wildlife and biodiversity legislation

  • Stay current with emerging science and recommend practical, value-added applications for Canfor operations

  • Initiate, guide, and oversee projects conducted by external consultants

  • Represent Canfor on industry and government committees related to wildlife and biodiversity

  • Support the Manager, Biodiversity & Wildlife with a range of activities including fieldwork, data analysis, reporting, communications, and research


 


For this role, you’ll come equipped with:



  • A BSc or MSc (preferred) in wildlife or aquatic ecology, natural resource conservation, or a related field, with 5+ years of relevant experience

  • Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) in BC or Professional Biologist (P.Biol) in Alberta, or eligibility within 6 months of hire

  • Strong understanding of and field experience in Alberta foothills and mixed wood ecosystems and/or South/Central BC ecosystems and associated fish and wildlife species

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences

  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills, including experience working with government and Indigenous partners

  • Proven organizational and presentation skills

  • Experience or familiarity with forest management practices (considered an asset)

  • Basic GIS experience and knowledge of wildlife/biodiversity legislation in AB and/or BC
