Human Factors Specialist

Job Description - Human Factors Specialist

Description

Fleetway’s Transition to Service department is seeking a Human Factors Specialist to join the team.

As a Human Factors & Systems Integration Specialist, you will help ensure complex systems are designed with the end user in mind. Working as part of multidisciplinary project teams, you will apply human factors, ergonomics, and human-centred design principles to support system development, testing, and implementation.

In this role, you will contribute to activities that improve usability, safety, accessibility, and operational effectiveness throughout the system lifecycle. You will collaborate with engineers, project teams, and stakeholders to identify user needs, evaluate design solutions, and support verification and validation activities.

Your work will support the design, integration, and delivery of complex marine and defence systems, including programs that contribute to the Royal Canadian Navy's future fleet of naval vessels. By helping ensure systems, equipment, workspaces, and processes are designed with the user in mind, you will play an important role in enhancing operational effectiveness and the overall user experience.

This is an exciting opportunity for individuals with experience in human factors, human performance, ergonomics, user research, systems engineering, kinesiology, or related disciplines who are interested in applying human-centred design principles to complex real-world challenges.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, execute, and maintain Human Factors Engineering (HFE) and Human Systems Integration (HSI) activities in alignment with project requirements, applicable standards, and customer expectations.
  • Apply human-centred design principles to support the development of safe, effective, and user-friendly systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to identify user needs and integrate human considerations into system design and development activities.
  • Support verification and validation activities, including human integration testing, usability assessments, and user evaluations.
  • Review and assess design changes, identifying potential impacts, risks, and opportunities related to system performance, usability, integration, testing, and acceptance.
  • Contribute to the development, documentation, and review of HFE and HSI deliverables throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Provide recommendations to improve user experience, operational effectiveness, safety, and overall system performance.
  • Participate in Integrated Project Teams and Working Groups, providing expertise and guidance on human factors and human systems integration considerations.
  • Support the evaluation of system requirements, concepts, interfaces, procedures, training approaches, and operating environments from a human-centred perspective.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Kinesiology, Engineering, Occupational Therapy, Industrial Design, or a related field.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience applying human-centred design, human factors, ergonomics, human performance, user research, usability, systems engineering, or Human Systems Integration principles in a professional environment.
  • Experience contributing to system design, testing, validation, requirements analysis, user research, or operational assessments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.

Assets

  • Experience with Human Systems Integration (HSI) and/or Human Factors Engineering (HFE) methodologies.
  • Experience within defence, marine, aerospace, transportation, healthcare, manufacturing, or other safety-critical industries.
  • Familiarity with verification and validation activities, usability testing, task analysis, human-machine interface evaluation, or risk assessment.
  • Experience supporting military, government, or regulated programs.
  • Knowledge of DND, NATO, or defence-related standards and practices.
