Role summary
As Country Medical Director –Canada, you will provide strategic medical leadership across assigned country or regional markets, ensuring scientific excellence, compliance, and high‑quality medical engagement. Reporting to the SVP Global Medical Affairs, you will be a key member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team (MALT), translating global medical strategy into effective local execution while adapting to regional regulatory and healthcare system requirements.
Role and Responsibilities
Strategic Medical Leadership
Lead and drive country‑level Medical Affairs strategy aligned with global medical objectives and therapy‑area strategies.
Partner with Global Medical Excellence and other lead countries to ensure consistent, high‑quality execution across markets.
Provide strategic medical input to support product launches, ongoing lifecycle management, and evidence generation activities.
Act as a senior medical advisor to regional leadership and cross‑functional stakeholders.
Medical Affairs Team Leadership
Lead, coach, and develop a high‑performing Country Medical Affairs team with a strong culture of scientific excellence, integrity, and collaboration.
Define and implement medical operating models, processes, and SOPs aligned with global guidance and local needs.
Drive talent development, succession planning, and performance management within the medical organization.
External Scientific Engagement & Medical Communications
Establish and maintain trusted scientific partnerships with key external experts, medical societies, and healthcare stakeholders.
Identify current and future therapeutic‑area insights, unmet needs, and emerging healthcare practices.
Lead Medical Communications, Disease State Awareness, and lifecycle management strategies aligned with Global Therapy Area Medical Leads.
Medical Governance, Compliance & Ethics
Lead the execution of Medical Compliance strategy in line with Medical Governance requirements, global standards, and local regulatory codes.
Ensure all medical activities and scientific exchange are compliant with company policies and applicable legal requirements.
Drive ethics and compliance training within the Medical Affairs organization.
Support investigations, audits, and the implementation of corrective and preventive actions as required.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Collaborate closely with Commercial, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, and other functions to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant medical support.
Review and approve local promotional and non‑promotional materials in accordance with governance processes.
Ensure a clear separation of medical and commercial activities while enabling effective cross‑functional partnership.
Qualifications
Education
Medical degree (MD) desirable but not required.
Advanced scientific degree strongly preferred (PharmD, PhD, DPharm, or equivalent).
Certifications or Designations
No mandatory certifications required.
Training or credentials related to medical governance, compliance, ethics, or industry codes considered an advantage.
Experience
Minimum 10 years of relevant clinical and/or Medical Affairs experience within pharma or biotech.
Proven leadership experience at local, regional, and/or global Medical Affairs level.
Demonstrated success in developing and executing medical strategies and plans.
Strong experience in Key External Expert (KOL/KEE) engagement and external scientific leadership.
Experience working in matrixed, cross‑functional organizations across multiple countries preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate complex scientific data into actionable medical strategies and operational plans.
Proven ability to lead and influence cross‑functional teams without direct authority.
Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
High integrity with a strong compliance‑first and patient‑centric mindset.
Ability to operate effectively in complex, multinational healthcare environments.
